Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational/technical training in electronics, electrical systems, or fire alarm technology preferred
  • Several years (typically 5+ for senior level) of hands-on experience in fire alarm installation, service, and repair; prior roles as a junior technician or apprenticeship common
  • Relevant certifications: NICET Level II/III/IV in Fire Alarm Systems, or state-specific licenses, or manufacturer-specific training
  • Strong knowledge of fire codes (e.g., NFPA 72), electrical systems, low-voltage wiring, and troubleshooting techniques
  • Work on ladders/scaffolding, lift up to 50 lbs., and perform fieldwork
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving, customer service, basic computer skills for programming/reporting, and ability to work independently or in teams
  • Excellent communication for client interactions and mentoring

Responsibilities

  • Installing, upgrading, programming, and configuring fire alarm systems, including detectors, control panels, wiring, notification devices, and integration with other building systems.
  • Conducting routine inspections, testing, and preventive maintenance to verify system functionality.
  • Troubleshooting and repairing malfunctions, replacing faulty components, and performing emergency service calls.
  • Reading blueprints, electrical layouts, and technical manuals to ensure code-compliant installations.
  • Documenting work, completing reports, and maintaining records for compliance and audits.
  • Collaborating with clients, contractors, inspectors, and team members.
  • Ensuring adherence to safety protocols, including working at heights, lifting equipment, and following OSHA guidelines.
  • Mentoring or supervising junior technicians on best practices.
