About The Position

We are seeking a Senior Technical Manager, Urban & Master Planning to join our growing team as we continue to expand our impact across the U.S. and globally. This leadership role offers the opportunity to shape innovative urban and master planning projects that make a difference. The position can be based in Laurel, MD; Philadelphia, PA; Alexandria, VA; Atlanta, GA; Houston, TX; or Detroit, MI —with flexibility to consider other U.S. locations for the right candidate. Your role Under general direction, provides technical expertise to diverse planning projects throughout the assigned area of responsibility and/or companywide. May function as lead planner, project manager, or technical consultant. Work will involve master planning for federal, state, regional, and local governments, as well as private organizations in the United States and for its worldwide partners. Tasks will primarily include work related to master planning, programming, planning charrettes, urban design, and land development planning with occasional transportation, and environmental projects. The person in this position will have the latitude and ability to help shape our future direction, implement ideas, and grow the business. The person in this position assumes a management and/or senior technical role on urban planning and programming, and related projects.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Planning, or a related field. Master's or graduate level, technical coursework is preferred.
  • 15 years of experience since B.S., with at least three of these years in positions with project management or supervisory responsibilities.
  • Extensive planning, programming, and/or construction experience is strongly desired.
  • AICP certification or PE is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or a willingness to obtain PMP is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Project Leadership & Execution Leads a team of interdisciplinary staff on many of the projects.
  • Assists in the development of Task Order Response Notifications, Request for Qualifications, and/or other similar type Request for Proposal responses.
  • Defines scope of project, with full responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating planning projects.
  • Coordinates preparation of technical reports and project submissions.
  • Manages planning projects for budget compliance, deadlines, and quality control.
  • Leads planning charrettes when needed.
  • Supports Business Development and Strategy initiatives both within the Urban Planning sector and across markets.
  • Identifies potential clients for state and local planning projects in our identified target cities and assists with developing strategies to grow an urban planning practice.
  • Collaborates with market leads to pursue new business opportunities and expand service offerings.
  • Performs other duties important for the planning program including Business Development.
  • Recruits, hires, and trains both new and existing staff.
  • Mentors and develops junior and mid-level planners
  • Ensures proper staffing levels and identifies requisite skills and training needed for existing work and future needs.
  • Maintains visibility and continuous technical improvement by actively participating in professional and industry organizations and interacting with key clients.
  • Promotes technical excellence, thought leadership, and adherence to quality processes throughout the team.
