About The Position

The Senior Tax Accountant plays a key role in delivering high-quality tax planning, compliance, and advisory services to clients across our Tax Advisory Services (TAS) and CFO Advisory Services (CAS) teams. This position requires strong technical expertise, excellent client communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple complex engagements simultaneously. In this role, you will serve as a trusted advisor to clients, lead tax strategy discussions, oversee and review tax filings, and support practice development. You will also mentor junior team members and contribute to ongoing process improvements to ensure our clients receive proactive, best-in-class service.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of tax accounting experience (public accounting strongly preferred)
  • Advanced knowledge of federal and state tax compliance and tax planning
  • Experience reviewing tax returns for accuracy and completeness
  • Strong ability to communicate complex tax topics clearly to clients
  • Experience with multiple entity types and high-complexity returns
  • Ability to manage multiple client engagements with deadlines

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or EA (strongly preferred)
  • Experience with multi-state and/or international tax issues
  • Experience with advisory-focused tax planning
  • Familiarity with workflow/task tools like Karbon
  • Strong documentation and process improvement mindset

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor advanced tax strategies aligned with clients’ long-term financial goals.
  • Analyze complex financial data to identify tax-saving opportunities, including industry-specific considerations.
  • Formulate and execute tax plans for multiple clients, including quarterly reviews and updates.
  • Lead proactive tax planning sessions to optimize client outcomes throughout the year.
  • Serve as final reviewer for federal, state, and local tax returns prepared by junior staff.
  • Manage filings for a wide range of entity types, including: Schedule C C-Corps S-Corps Partnerships Trusts, estates, and fiduciaries Exempt organizations and foundations
  • Oversee complex returns including multi-state filings and international tax considerations.
  • Lead quality control efforts by implementing best practices in preparation and review workflows.
  • Lead client meetings and present tax strategies in a clear, confident, and client-friendly way.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through exceptional service and responsiveness.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for top-tier clients, resolving tax-related issues and questions.
  • Mentor and train junior tax accountants, supporting skill growth and technical development.
  • Contribute to scaling the tax practice through improved systems, processes, and workflows.
  • Support onboarding and training of new TAS employees.
  • Conduct in-depth tax research on complex issues using Ask Blue J and other resources.
  • Stay current on changes in federal and state tax laws and apply them to client work.
  • Draft internal tax memoranda documenting research, recommendations, and planning strategies.
  • Lead responses to complex tax notices, coordinating with IRS and state tax agencies as needed.
  • Support CAS engagements related to tangible taxes, including: Property tax matters Sales & use tax audits Business tax audits
  • Prepare and submit written correspondence and handle phone calls with tax authorities.
  • Ensure compliance with all required tax documentation and filing standards.
  • Lead updates to preparation checklists, review checklists, software workflows, and documentation.
  • Participate in firm-wide process improvement initiatives and contribute tax expertise.
  • Maintain strong documentation and record-keeping standards in systems including Google Drive and Karbon.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development through firm-funded training and conferences.
  • Complete all assigned tasks and overdue items in Karbon.
  • Respond to Karbon triage emails, notes, and assigned tasks during business hours (9 AM – 6 PM).
  • Collaborate with TAS and CAS team members on special projects and complex client needs.
  • Notify the manager if password access or credentials are needed to complete work.
