About The Position

In this position as Senior Staff Accountant, you will serve as a key member of the Finance team, functioning at an advanced operational and compliance level to lead complex accounting processes and ensure financial integrity across The Family Place's multi-fund nonprofit environment. You'll oversee government and restricted fund accounting, lead components of monthly and year-end close processes, and manage high-risk financial areas including grant compliance, revenue recognition, and cost allowability under Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200). Partner cross-functionally with program leadership, Development, and external auditors to produce timely financial reports, variance analyses, and spend projections that support strategic decision-making. You'll maintain strong internal controls, prepare complex journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations, support Form 990 preparation and year-end audits, and provide technical guidance to finance and program staff. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
  • Minimum of 15 credit hours in accounting coursework required.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Experience supporting external audits; Single Audit experience strongly preferred.
  • Aptitude to work with a $20 million budget.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting principles.
  • Working knowledge of Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200) preferred.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis).
  • Ability to analyze complex financial data and translate findings for non-finance leaders.
  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and meet critical deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Ability to communicate to and interact effectively with co-workers, managers, and other stakeholders sufficient to convey information and to receive work direction.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Duties are usually performed while sitting, with occasional periods of standing or walking.
  • Work is performed primarily in a professional office environment at The Family Place due to the confidential nature of financial and grant documentation.
  • Duties are largely sedentary with occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs).
  • Regular interaction with staff and external partners is required.

Responsibilities

  • Grant Management & Compliance Monitor grant budgets versus actual expenditures and project future spending needs to ensure optimal fund utilization.
  • Prepare accurate and timely grant billing and reporting in full compliance with funder requirements.
  • Maintain detailed grant documentation to support compliance audits and funder inquiries
  • Financial Operations & Reconciliations Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of all financial reporting.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, investment portfolio accounts, and related financial statements.
  • Prepare and verify journal entries for accounts receivable, grants receivable, prepaid expenses, pledges, non-government grants, and accrued liabilities.
  • Record, maintain, and reconcile the agency's fixed asset activities and depreciation schedules to ensure accurate accounting.
  • Ensure all account reconciliations are timely, well-documented, and audit-ready.
  • Audit Support & Compliance Coordinate the timely completion of audit schedules and provide comprehensive support during year-end audits.
  • Maintain organized documentation and supporting schedules to facilitate external audit processes.
  • Respond to auditor inquiries and ensure all findings are addressed promptly.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner with the Development Team to reconcile accounting software with the fundraising database monthly.
  • Provide technical advice, assistance, and cross-training to other accounting personnel as needed.
  • Serve as backup for accounts payable processing to ensure continuity of operations.
  • Continuous Improvement & Professional Development Attend ongoing training sessions to stay current on accounting standards, grant compliance, and nonprofit financial management.
  • Participate in employee meetings and contribute to departmental goals.
  • Prepare ad hoc reports and complete special projects as assigned.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
