About The Position

Eaton’s corporate research team is seeking a Senior Specialist Engineer to support our aerospace electrification research efforts. This position can be based in one of the following locations within the US: Golden, CO, Plymouth, MN, Raleigh, NC, Southfield, MI, Galesburg, MI, Menomonee Falls, WI, Pittsburgh, PA, Beachwood, OH, or Irvine, CA. Other large Eaton locations in the US can be considered. Candidates must be based within 50 miles of these locations as relocation assistance is not available. Up to 25% travel is expected on average. The expected annual salary range for this role is $137000 - $201000 a year. Please note the salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The Senior Specialist Engineer, Aerospace Power Systems will initiate, create and lead research and develop programs within the Eaton Research Lab (ERL) organization to develop and demonstrate new electrified aircraft power distribution, protection and controls and new power system architectures. This position serve as a recognized technical authority in aerospace power systems, lead technical research programs and develop strong relationships with both engineering and business leaders Eaton to drive strong business cases for new commercial electrified aircraft applications . Additionally, this position will work closely with our Global Technology Managers and be instrumental in acquiring the necessary resources and funding (including US Government) for future programs. As a Senior Specialist, you work closely with other electrification experts within Eaton to develop the technology and strategies for broader electrified aircraft applications within the ERL Energy Systems team. You will be a principal investigator on key projects, responsible for developing and meeting project schedules, defining scopes of work, maintaining cost and technical targets for multiple programs, leading and approving technical reports for all research and innovation themes under his/her control. As a subject matter expert within ERL’s global Energy System team, you will develop and maintain relationships with the external technical community (academia, national labs, government agencies, industry groups, international events), mentor staff and consult with key internal and external stakeholders, and customers.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution required.
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in electrical power distribution and protection systems
  • Minimum 5 years in the aerospace electrification industry including demonstrated knowledge of aircraft electrical power distribution and protection system architectures
  • This position requires access to export-controlled information. To conform to U.S. Government export regulations applicable to that information, applicant must be a U.S. person, defined as a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (green card holder), (iii) refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) asylee under 8U.S.C. § 1158.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD from an accredited institution in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience working on or leading government proposals, programs, or contracts within an organization.
  • Experience as a Principal Investigator in energy or power systems research setting
  • Experience applying data-driven AI/ML techniques to power system analysis
  • Experience with modeling controls, protection or diagnostics of power systems
  • Expertise with aerospace power systems including multi-device protection, coordination and controls
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: aircraft/ vehicle electrical distribution architecture modeling and analysis, circuit protection and advanced control system design, energy storage systems for aircraft applications, thermal and air management systems for aircraft. This includes creating specifications, defining application space, modeling and designing technical solution concepts, and building and testing prototypes to validate models/hypotheses and documenting results
  • Experience in leading engineering project teams and mentoring engineering talent to develop concepts and prototypes for bench and in-vehicle demonstrations, especially in the face of unknown or incomplete requirements

  • Create and define research and technology themes, participate in defining technology investment strategy and lead complex global technology realization programs for our aerospace electrification efforts.
  • Create emerging power systems research programs based on new, novel breakthrough or disruptive technologies necessary to help speed the energy transition in the aerospace industry while improving efficiency and reliability required in this industry.
  • Further advance state-of-the-art energy and power systems by identifying and developing commercialization opportunities with Eaton’s diverse global businesses.
  • Contribute to technical thought leadership through aerospace electrification roadmaps by collaborating and coordinating with multi-disciplinary, globally distributed teams.
  • Identify program/project risks and influence key stakeholders to make pivot/persevere/kill decisions.
  • You will influence, resolve and communicate major changes in projects or program achievements to cross functional teams across all levels.
  • As a recognized global authority in aerospace electrification, you will coordinate with and/or influence the research focus of partnering university consortiums and national lab initiatives
