About The Position

GENERAL PURPOSE Performs skilled solid waste operations and equipment handling in support of landfill, transfer station, and public waste management functions. Responsible for operating and maintaining heavy equipment, assisting with site and equipment maintenance, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the general direction of the Maintenance Supervisor and/or Solid Waste Director. SUPERVISION EXERCISED None ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Operates heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, dozers, excavators, skid steers, compactors, and forklifts to handle Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and recyclables. Assists in the hauling of MSW to off-site landfills as needed. Performs daily inspections and minor mechanical maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including tires, oil, air filters, and lubrication. Performs diagnostics and assists in repairs involving mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems. Loads, pushes, sorts, compacts, and buries solid waste in accordance with landfill protocols. Assists the public at the tipping floor and other areas by guiding proper disposal and ensuring safety. Handles delivery and maintenance of residential garbage cans and other resale or recycled materials. Supports green waste operations, including the use of trommel screens and grinders. Identifies and responds appropriately to hazardous or regulated waste materials. Completes and documents pre-trip and post-trip inspections. Adheres to all county, state, and federal safety and environmental guidelines. Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of experience in solid waste operations or in the operation of heavy equipment
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have experience operating Loader, Dozer, Excavator, Forklift, and Skid Steer equipment
  • Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid Utah Commercial Driver's License. OR demonstrate an equivalent combination of experience in solid waste operations and equipment use and possess a valid Utah Driver's License.
  • Working knowledge of landfill operations, environmental compliance, and solid waste handling procedures.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems and basic repair practices.
  • Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and maintain records.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with the public professionally.
  • Ability to work under physically demanding conditions and adapt to changing schedules or workloads.
  • Basic computer skills for work documentation and inspection reporting.
  • Must be professional in hygiene, appearance, and conduct.
  • Must achieve and maintain competence in job knowledge, safety practices, and operational performance.

Nice To Haves

  • Equipment training certifications from recognized organizations (e.g., SWANA, Utah L-TAP, Salt Lake Community College) are preferred.
