About The Position

This is complex lead-level work that involves a combination of advanced technical training and skills in the maintenance and operation of traffic signals and ITS devices. The Sr. Signal Technician may lead the daily activities of a crew or construction contractors under the general direction of the Traffic Signal Supervisor. This position is in the Traffic Signal Systems division, which is under the Public Works Department. Generally, the hiring range is $65,991-$82,489 annually. Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Must have three years of field experience and/or education involving knowledge and application of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). This includes the design, construction and maintenance of traffic signals, the design and installation of signing, and the layout and installation of striping as it pertains to traffic signals.
  • A combination of knowledge and experience may be considered.
  • Must possess a State of Colorado Class (B) Commercial Driver License with complying insurance upon hire (Class A License is preferred). Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment. Incumbents in this position must meet the Department of Transportation physical exam and drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Requires ATTSA Traffic Control Technician (TCT) certification or IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician certification.
  • Requires IMSA Level II Traffic Signal (Field) Technician certification.

Nice To Haves

  • IMSA Level II Traffic Signal Electrician (Bench) Technician certification preferred upon hire or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
  • IMSA Level I Signs and IMSA Level I Markings certifications desirable upon hire or ability to obtain within one year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Full competency at operation and maintenance of traffic signal controllers and field equipment, PTZ cameras, uninterruptable power sources, and vehicle detection (loops, video, radar, wireless sensors).
  • Full competency at the Lead worker level to direct assigned crews.
  • Responds to urgent traffic signal malfunctions, ensures repairs are completed correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Serves as part of the on-call staff for emergencies involving traffic control devices, carrying a pager/phone for a week at a time.
  • Oversees/Inspects contractors during traffic signal construction to ensure that Douglas County specifications are met.
  • Conducts annual conflict monitor testing including test documentation.
  • Operates aerial bucket truck for emergency and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Monitors and participates in the installation of new signal and ITS equipment, upgrades to existing traffic signal equipment. Installs/maintains flashing beacons. Troubleshoots circuits utilizing a multi-meter and related test equipment.
  • Performs set-up and testing of all traffic signal cabinets prior to installation at the intersection.
  • Able to read/draw and understand blueprints and complex electronic schematics.
  • In depth knowledge of the specialized software necessary to operate/maintain traffic signals and all related components.
  • Maintains inventory using computer to track and monitor supplies.
  • Understands traffic signal controller timing and operational parameters.
  • Builds necessary traffic signal equipment as needed.
  • Understands and knows MUTCD signing standards for the colors and shapes of the signs, i.e., regulatory, warning, and guide signs.
  • Work Zone Traffic Control - Understands and knows barricade classifications and when to use each type. Able to read and set up work zones per Part VI of the MUTCD.
  • Other duties as assigned.
