About The Position

This apprentice level position works directly with a skilled signal technician helping to complete tasks to operate and maintain county traffic signals and intelligent transportation systems. No previous traffic signal equipment experience is required. External and on-the-job-training is provided so individuals can obtain the knowledge, skills, and judgment required to further their technical expertise and advance their career. This position is in the Traffic Signal Systems group, which is under the Public Works Department. Generally, the hiring range is $52,197-$65,246 annually. Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment.
  • Must obtain, with County assistance, a State of Colorado Class (B) Commercial Driver License with complying insurance within 12 months after hire. Incumbent is expected to obtain a Commercial Driver License Class B to achieve career progression in this classification series. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment. Upon possession of a Commercial Driver License, incumbents in this position must meet the Department of Transportation physical exam and drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Within two years, employee must become familiar with the MUTCD and obtain the following certifications: ATTSA Traffic Control Technician or IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician, IMSA Level I Sign & Markings IMSA Level I Signals

Responsibilities

  • Assists in responding to urgent traffic signal malfunctions and learns how repairs are completed correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Aids County staff who oversee/inspect contractors during traffic signal construction and learns how to ensure that Douglas County specifications are met.
  • Follows all ground operation safety protocols when others are operating the aerial bucket truck for emergency and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Participates in the installation of new signal and ITS equipment, and upgrades to existing traffic signal equipment. Helps to install/maintain flashing beacons. Learns how to troubleshoot circuits utilizing a multi-meter and related test equipment.
  • Through the completion of the daily duties of this position, will develop an in-depth knowledge of the specialized software necessary to operate/maintain traffic signals, video surveillance cameras, vehicle detection systems, and all related components.
  • Other duties as assigned.
