About The Position

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Genentech! The Opportunity The Department of Protein Sciences at Genentech has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Scientist with a strong background in protein biochemistry and structural biology to join our Structural Biology and Protein Engineering groups. In this role, you will act as a technical expert responsible for the production of high-quality protein reagents in support of small molecule, peptide and antibody drug discovery campaigns. You will support hit finding efforts such as high-throughput screening, DNA-encoded library technologies, or display-based selections and deliver high-resolution ligand-protein structures in support of lead molecule optimization. Additionally, you will investigate, institute, and develop methods to improve the tractability of challenging proteins and identify, evaluate and implement new technology opportunities to accelerate and scale protein production. A proven track record in optimizing the expression and purification of challenging proteins for functional and structural studies is essential. Hands-on experience using different purification and reconstitution approaches and biochemical/structural characterization of membrane proteins and membrane-associated protein complexes from recombinant or endogenous sources is highly desirable. In addition to expertise in protein biochemistry, you will employ biochemical, biophysical, and computational methods to support structure-based drug design, antibody discovery, protein engineering approaches, and you will elucidate function and mechanism of action through high-resolution structural analyses. Accordingly, proficiency in X-ray crystallography and/or cryo-EM methods and a passion for exploring the structural basis of protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions is essential. The successful candidate will be a technical expert who can lead from the bench and collaborate fruitfully with colleagues on multiple interdepartmental project teams. Overall, you will be an outstanding biochemist, structural biologist and collaborator who will have a significant impact on our portfolio, with the unique opportunity to help drive discovery projects from inception to early development.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, protein engineering, and/or structural biology.
  • 0-3 years post-Ph.D. experience.
  • Experience with multiple protein targets is required.
  • Productive pre-doctoral training reflected in an established track record of high-impact publications or patents.
  • Ability to plan, design, and execute experiments within the context of department or project goals, maintaining necessary scientific records and drawing sound conclusions.
  • Hands-on experience engineering and optimizing the production of challenging protein targets to generate and characterize milligram quantities of high-quality protein reagents.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • A fearless attitude to tackle longstanding difficult problems.
  • Demonstrate a strong prospect for independent thought and creativity in the development and application of mission-critical technology.

Nice To Haves

  • Membrane protein experience on GPCRs, ion channels, and/or transporters is highly desirable.
  • Experience with biophysical/biochemical assays to characterize protein conformation is a plus.
