About The Position

We are committed to research that uncovers the underlying biology of complex diseases. Our focus is on illnesses with few, if any, treatment options. We are looking for an experienced Discovery Toxicologist to join our Discovery Toxicology Group as part of the Preclinical Safety Department providing global safety assessment of novel therapeutics across all therapeutic areas from our Cambridge, MA campus. You would work in a highly collaborative environment and serve as the primary liaison to Discovery teams by providing safety testing strategies, designing / overseeing toxicology studies and developing risk assessments to enable project progress to key decision points. This is a critical position to provide timely and insightful analysis of toxicology information relevant to decisions around target pathway selection, candidate prioritization and Development transitions in support of Biogen’s Discovery-stage portfolio. This role is part of Discovery teams working on small and large molecules, antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) and gene therapy programs. Opportunities exist to expand responsibilities to include support for early Development-stage programs.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as liaison and advisor to Discovery teams on lead identification and optimization strategy, summarize toxicology profile and provide recommendation of advancement of molecules to enable earliest possible go/no go decision.
  • Collaborate effectively with other scientists, including Medicinal Chemists, Protein Chemists, Pathologists, Study Managers, Pharmacokineticists, Pharmacologists, Formulation Scientists and other Toxicologists to generate early nonclinical safety plan and design, execute and interpret results from in vitro and in vivo toxicology studies.
  • Deliver impactful oral presentations on strategy, study design, and data analysis to Preclinical Safety, Discovery program teams, and senior management forums.
  • May serve as a subject matter expert (SME) within their field of specialization to provide input on other programs and studies in Discovery and Development.
  • Provide guidance / lead assessment of innovative technologies and databases in the field of toxicology, evaluate new in silico, in vitro and in vivo screening assays, and provide recommendations to advance Biogen’s toxicology screening strategy as appropriate.
  • May represent Biogen on external scientific committees and industry working groups in the area of Discovery Toxicology.
