About The Position

The Advanced Combustion & Energy System (ACES) Laboratory, in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, seeks a Senior Research Scientist to support ongoing funded research. The incumbent will independently design research and ensure that all research protocols follow the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University. The incumbent will serve as an experienced scientist in the lab, providing technical leadership and scientific oversight in experimental research related to advanced energy systems for the active projects including the DOE funded HYPOWER project, a hydrogen research and development testbed, as well as the NYSERDA PON 550 National Grid Ventures 100%25 hydrogen linear generator project. The successful candidate will bring strong experience in applied research, laboratory safety, and complex experimental systems, along with the ability to guide students, maintain research momentum, and elevate the scientific rigor of laboratory activities.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Five years [5] of full-time research experience in advanced or alternative energy, to include at least three years of research experience following attainment of a doctoral degree.

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior-level technical expertise to sponsored and collaborative research efforts, including the NYSERDA PON 550 National Grid Ventures 100%25 hydrogen linear generator project and DOE funded HyPower project.
  • Contribute rigorous scientific input on system and experimental design and analysis, critically evaluate experimental results, and actively participate in technical discussions, project reporting, and project decision-making to ensure milestones and deliverables are met.
  • Assist in the preparation of papers for publications; may be asked to present at conferences, workshops, and seminars, as needed.
  • Assist in the development and submission of new grant proposals.
  • Actively participate in technical discussions and collaborative decision-making to ensure project milestones and deliverables are met on time.
  • Conduct and guide experimental research involving hazardous and flammable chemicals.
  • Support laboratory operations and complex experimental systems, including engine-based test platforms.
  • Oversee safe laboratory practices, ensure compliance with safety protocols, and contribute to high-quality data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Mentor and supervise postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate researchers.
  • Providing technical guidance, training, and oversight.
  • Ensure progress, accountability, and alignment with project timelines and objectives, while fostering a collaborative and productive research environment.
  • Collaborate with members of the scientific community, from academia and industry, to advance research objectives and foster productive partnerships.
  • Maintain all laboratory records consistent with University policy.
