About The Position

The Senior Project Manager (SPM) is responsible for leading large, complex, high-value power generation projects from initiation through closeout. These projects will consist of standby generation and prime power generation (both diesel- and gas-fired), switchgear, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and related equipment. This role ensures successful project execution—including delivering on time, within budget, with high quality, and client satisfaction. SPM is a leadership role requiring effective mentoring of junior staff, contributing to the company’s culture of safety, supporting operational planning, and driving continuous improvement throughout the organization. The SPM is responsible for working effectively with internal teams, external contractors, and customers to coordinate necessary work for the successful installation, startup, and commissioning of all equipment within Wheeler’s scope.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of project management experience with increasing responsibility.
  • Proven success managing large, complex, or multi-million-dollar projects.
  • Accountability and ownership of project outcomes, including managing bringing in outside expertise when needed.
  • Strong understanding of job cost, forecasting, and financial controls.
  • Experience with project management software (Procore preferred).
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in fast-paced environments
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications and documentation.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, business, or related field.
  • PMP, CCM, or equivalent certification.
  • Experience in construction, mechanical, electrical trades
  • Experience with ERP/financial management/construction management software systems such as Microsoft Dynamics, Unit 4 (CODA) Financials, Vista by Viewpoint, JD Edwards, CMiC.
  • Experience in construction, engineering, or capital project delivery.
  • Experience with project management software (Procore, Microsoft Project, Smartsheet).
  • Familiarity with Caterpillar or other OEM equipment and service tools.
  • Relevant safety training.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret construction drawings, piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), wiring schematics, network diagrams, specifications, submittals, operations & maintenance (O&M) manuals.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies—including daily TRACK cards, periodic safety audits, recording near misses and other observations that can improve safety.
  • Travel to project sites as required, including potential overnight stays and extended hours.
  • Lead full project lifecycle, including planning, execution, monitoring, control, and closeout.
  • Develop project execution plans, schedules, communication plans and update those on a rolling three-week look-ahead so others can coordinate as needed (e.g. project site Superintendents can then take a high-level 3-week schedule and fill in details on what needs to happen each day)
  • Ensure deliverables meet quality, safety, and performance standards.
  • Resolve escalated project issues and maintain progress on critical path items.
  • Develop, monitor, update, and manage project budgets, forecasts, and cost-to-complete.
  • Review and approve pay applications, change orders, and vendor invoices.
  • Serve as the primary client interface, maintaining proactive communication.
  • Lead client presentations and status updates.
  • Interpret and enforce prime and subcontract agreements.
  • Identify and manage project risks, issues, and opportunities.
  • Mentor and coach junior project staff.
  • Ensure consistent use of systems such as Procore, scheduling tools, and ERP software.
  • Support onboarding and training on project tools and workflows.
  • Lead closeout activities, turnover documentation, and client handoff.
  • Conduct lessons-learned reviews during and after each project and contribute to organizational knowledge and continuous improvement objectives.
  • Work effectively with procurement staff and systems (e.g. Procore Lead Time) to ensure the correct equipment, parts, and supplies arrive on time and within budget.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively between internal team members, owners/end-customers and subcontractors to ensure project progress.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
