Vali Health | Senior Product Designer — Agentic Systems

People Culture TalentSan Mateo, CA

About The Position

Imagine designing the first AI that can independently coordinate complex healthcare operations—scheduling caregivers, managing emergencies, communicating with families—while knowing exactly when to involve humans in critical decisions. This isn't about making chatbots friendlier or automation prettier. This is about designing entirely new patterns for how humans and AI work together in life-critical situations. You'll be our first design hire, shaping not just interfaces but the fundamental experience of trusting an AI with decisions that affect people's wellbeing. Every interaction you design could be the difference between a senior getting care or spending a night alone. This is a unique opportunity to define the UX of next-generation automation in healthcare —one of the most important and impactful industries in the world.

Requirements

  • 6-10+ years in product design with a track record of shipping complex, systems-oriented products
  • AI/ML product experience — you've worked on products with intelligent automation, decision-support systems, or agentic workflows
  • Strong portfolio that demonstrates systems thinking, interaction design innovation, and real-world impact
  • Human-AI interaction design — experience creating interfaces where AI takes initiative and humans need to understand and trust automated decisions
  • Complex system design — ability to make sophisticated backend logic feel simple and transparent to users
  • Rapid prototyping & iteration — comfort designing in ambiguity and testing ideas quickly with real users
  • Cross-functional partnership — experience working closely with engineers and product managers to define system behaviors and technical constraints
  • Executive presence — comfortable presenting design decisions and strategic recommendations to leadership

Nice To Haves

  • Service design or workflow-oriented product experience
  • Familiarity with healthcare operations or regulated industries
  • Technical understanding of LLMs, agent architectures, or AI system constraints

Responsibilities

  • Define how autonomous agents communicate their decisions, express uncertainty, and invite human collaboration—creating entirely new interaction patterns for AI that takes initiative
  • Design the personality, behavior, and communication style of AI agents that healthcare operators will trust with critical decisions
  • Translate sophisticated backend logic and decision-making frameworks into interfaces that feel intuitive and transparent
  • Create design patterns for how AI explains its reasoning, handles edge cases, and builds confidence with users over time
  • Own the persistent UX layer—the always-on interface through which users understand what agents are doing, why they're doing it, and what's happening next
  • Create cohesive experiences that span proactive AI actions, system monitoring, human interventions, and accountability trails
  • Conduct deep discovery with home care operators to understand complex, real-world workflows and failure points
  • Build and test prototypes rapidly, then translate insights into polished, production-ready designs that work under pressure
  • Establish Vali's Design Culture
  • Build our design system, standards, and guidelines for AI-driven interactions from the ground up
  • Set the foundation for how we approach AI UX, communication design, and human-centered automation
