About The Position

These are technical and professional positions that perform Planning and Zoning-related work for programs and/or projects within the Department. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, technical, planning and/or zoning assignments regarding the Comprehensive Plan, Rezones, Developments of Regional Impact, Neighborhood Planning, and regulating the requirements in the Land Development Code. Specific functions are listed below and represent the normal progression from Planning & Zoning Technician I to Principal Planner. Working Conditions: Typical indoor office environment. Sitting for long periods of time, working on computer. Lifting equipment or supplies up to 25 pounds alone and up to 50 pounds with assistance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent certification.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of professional experience in planning, construction, zoning and land use regulation, engineering or field closely related to area of assignment.
  • Valid driver's license required with valid Florida driver's license required within 30 days of hire.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Ability to train/mentor direct reports.
  • Strong decision-making skills.
  • Proven problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to resolve team conflicts.
  • Knowledge of advanced software applications.
  • Skill with Tech II equipment.
  • Advanced Microsoft Word ability.
  • Advanced Microsoft Power Point ability.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel ability.
  • Advanced Adobe Pro ability.
  • Advanced ARC/GIS knowledge and ability.
  • Advanced technical knowledge in all skills related to Reviewer on Call functions.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Able to assign work to others.
  • Advanced knowledge of local and state land use and building codes.
  • Able to promote and encourage teamwork.
  • Understanding of department's goals and objectives.
  • Able to coordinate team efforts.

Responsibilities

  • The lead technical position provides direction, assistance, training, and coordination to Planning & Zoning Tech I-III.
  • Reports directly to department Section Manager.
  • Reviews and signs written zoning verifications.
  • Researches and prepares administrative determinations for Manager's signature.
  • Periodically reviews section processes and updates.
  • Trains and Coordinates Tech I-III in all job functions, monitors progress and reports to Section Manager.
  • Updates and maintains section's written procedures under direction of Section Manager.
  • Provides assistance to planners, the public, and development professionals on land use requirements.
  • Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.
