About The Position

The Senior Philanthropy Officer (SPO) plays a key role in advancing Planned Parenthood Northern California’s (PPNorCal) mission by building deep, meaningful relationships with a portfolio of individual donors. Managing a core portfolio of approximately 125-175 qualified major donors and 25 prospects in research and discovery, the SPO develops tailored engagement and solicitation strategies to foster long-term philanthropic partnerships. This role also supports donor engagement through personalized communications, cultivation and fundraising events (both major and intimate gatherings), and planned giving. With a strong commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), the SPO ensures that donor communications are clear, respectful, and aligned with our values—enhancing donor proximity, engagement, and satisfaction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of three years of progressive experience in fundraising, with a strong track record in individual giving and major gifts.
  • Demonstrated success in managing donor relationships and securing major gifts.
  • Strong understanding of donor-centered fundraising and strategic philanthropy.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage and influence high-level donors and stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including donor proposals, impact reports, and presentations.
  • Proficiency in fundraising software (Raiser’s Edge NXT preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and commitment to the mission of PPNorCal.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of fundraising.

  • Experience working in reproductive health, healthcare, or social justice organizations is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Build and sustain authentic relationships with individual donors through personalized engagement, with a focus on Northern California.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Individual Giving to set portfolio goals and strategies that drive donor satisfaction and revenue growth.
  • Manage a portfolio of 125+ qualified major donors and 25 discovery prospects, developing individualized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plans.
  • Partner with development staff to incorporate deferred and legacy gift opportunities into donor conversations.
  • Support and co-lead cultivation and fundraising events—from intimate salons to larger regional gatherings—that build community and deepen donor connection.
  • Serve as the operational fundraising lead for the region’s annual major fundraising event and select key cultivation events.
  • Manage a regional volunteer board in Eureka, supporting their engagement and alignment with fundraising goals.
  • Create and contribute to tailored donor communications that reflect organizational values and inspire giving, including proposals, updates, and thank-yous.
  • Identify opportunities to engage donors across giving vehicles including major gifts, planned gifts, campaigns, and endowment funds.
  • Train and prepare senior leadership, CEO, and board volunteers for donor engagement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with volunteer leaders and advisory groups to expand the pipeline of major and planned gift prospects.
  • Foster close, collaborative communication with internal program teams, health center staff, and administrative teams to surface meaningful donor communications.
  • Contribute to team-wide strategy on events, communications, donor experience, and DEI best practices.
  • Track all portfolio activity, touchpoints, and movement using Raiser’s Edge; maintain data integrity and contribute to reporting and analysis.
  • Participate in cross-functional workgroups and committees as needed.
  • Actively support and embody PPNorCal’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in all aspects of donor and colleague relationships.
  • Travel may be required up to 30% within Northern California and the Bay Area to meet with donors, support events, and engage with regional staff and volunteers.
  • Work occasional evening and weekend hours as needed to support donor events and engagements.
