About The Position

The Senior Payroll Manager is responsible for overseeing day-to-day payroll operations to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing. This role leads payroll staff, manages operational workflows, and partners cross-functionally with HR, Finance, and Benefits to deliver a high-quality employee payroll experience.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of progressive payroll experience, including people management
  • Must have hands-on experience processing payroll in-house, not solely managing or submitting payroll to third-party providers (i.e. ADP).
  • Strong knowledge of payroll tax, wage and hour laws, and payroll accounting
  • Experience with enterprise payroll systems (e.g., Workday, ADP, UKG)
  • Proven ability to manage deadlines in a high-volume environment
  • Processing multi-state payroll and tax

Responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end payroll processing across all pay cycles (weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly)
  • Review and approve payroll registers, tax filings, and reconciliations
  • Ensure accurate processing of wages, bonuses, commissions, equity, and deductions
  • Oversee off-cycle payrolls, adjustments, and retroactive payments
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage and tax regulations
  • Maintain payroll documentation, audit trails, and internal controls
  • Support internal and external audits, including year-end and tax audits
  • Monitor regulatory changes and implement required operational updates
  • Lead, coach, and develop payroll staff
  • Assign workloads, set priorities, and ensure coverage for payroll cycles
  • Conduct performance reviews and support professional development
  • Administer payroll systems and ensure data integrity
  • Partner with HRIS and IT on system updates, testing, and integrations
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and automation
  • Collaborate with HR, Finance, Benefits, and Accounting on payroll-related matters
  • Serve as escalation point for complex employee payroll issues
  • Support compensation, benefits, and finance initiatives requiring payroll expertise
