About The Position

Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Senior Operations Engineer at our Burns Harbor, Indiana operation. The Senior Operations Engineer is responsible for supporting the operating department at the Power Station and ensuring that the systems run safely, reliably, and deliver optimum results. The ideal candidates will be a self-starter who enjoys a fast-paced and dynamic work environment. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in physical science/engineering.
  • Experience in an industrial/manufacturing setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and team building skills.
  • Ability to lift more than 25 pounds on occasion.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Mechanical or Combustion Engineering.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in an industrial/manufacturing setting specializing in steam boilers, combustion systems, reverse osmosis water plants, etc.
  • Preferred 3 or more years of supervisory experience in engineering, operations, or maintenance of utility systems and power generation plants.
  • Previous experience of working as or with bargaining unit employees highly recommended.
  • Will be required to work rotating shifts and/or be on call 24 hours of operations.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely to improve reliability and quality following all required safety policies.
  • Consult with current technical personnel and corporate R & D personnel as required.
  • Implement industry standards, standard operational procedures, and comply with environmental/governmental regularities.
  • Design and implement process improvements, streamlining workflows, identifying growth opportunities, as well as creating operational policies and procedures to support long-term business goals.
  • Plan and develop operational strategies that align with long-term business goals of other production departments of the plant as well as communicate business strategies and objectives of department/company to a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify problems, analyze root causes, develop creative solutions, and implement changes to improve processes or outcomes.
  • Recruit, train, motivate, and evaluate staff performance to build high-performing teams, supply best practices to operating departments for continued improvement in reliability.
  • Implement work and asset management practice that is prone in utilities and Power Generation industry, understanding utility finance that would require controlling operational budgets, forecast operational expenses, financial and budget oversight, quality control and compliance, cross-functional collaboration.
  • Closely supervise bargaining unit operators who oversee the operation of high-pressure boilers, steam systems, turboblowers, and turbogenerators.
  • Other duties as assigned.
