Axcelis is seeking a mechanical engineer to lead the design and development of highly mechanized and automated capital equipment for the semiconductor industry. Working closely with product and marketing managers, the engineer is responsible for developing innovative solutions to difficult engineering challenges facing ion implanters. Projects may include new product development, continuous improvement, part obsolescence, and field-identified issues. The engineer will champion sound engineering methods, analysis tools, DfX, and concurrent product development processes to deliver solutions right the first time. In addition to owning projects, the engineer will also guide less experienced engineers, knowing when to coach and when to delegate to elevate others on the team. The role requires close day-to-day interaction with both project managers and key customers to manage the complete mechanical engineering lifecycle for new and legacy products. Strong interpersonal skills are mandatory, together with a drive to succeed.

  • Develop new and innovative solutions for existing and future ion implanters.
  • Ensures adherence to the development process, including requirements planning, schedule estimates, concept reviews, design reviews, verification, and validation test plans.
  • Monitors progress of projects, confers with program and project engineers, and reviews reports to see that development is progressing according to schedule and within budgetary guidelines.
  • Recommends corrective action as required.
  • Manages the mechanical engineering interface to the design services group and to offshore teams to deliver quality designs and on-time performance.
  • Communicates to customers and cross-functional groups the status of various development projects.
  • Ensures that products and projects are delivered to meet customer requirements and specifications.
  • Holds mechanical engineers accountable to quality goals, schedules, development process, and system performance.
  • Ensures mechanical designs meet design objectives as well as safety, industry (SEMI), and customer specific requirements.
  • Executes design, qualification, and release of mechanical assemblies—experience with semiconductor capital equipment a plus.
  • Troubleshoot, find root cause, and recommend corrective actions to system-level problems that cross multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Accomplished mechanical engineer capable of contributing to technical design.
  • Know how to roll up your sleeves and get the job done right.
  • Practical experience with the design, manufacture, and service of highly automated electromechanical systems.
  • Have an unrelenting drive for understanding the fundamental physics behind the most complicated parts of our system; refuse to take things at face value.
  • Must possess strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid technical background to understand, communicate, and make decisions to improve the overall product and mechanical architecture.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Experience with a PLM system.
  • BSME (MSME preferred)
  • 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering
  • Experience working with offshore teams is a benefit.
  • Having some knowledge of controls and electrical systems would be helpful.
  • Specific knowledge of the following is a plus: PTC/Windchill 3D modeling and FEA analysis skills.
  • Specific knowledge of the following is a plus: PTC/Creo, Ansys.
  • Executes design, qualification, and release of mechanical assemblies—experience with semiconductor capital equipment a plus.
  • Base pay is one part of our U.S. total compensation package which includes eligibility in the Axcelis Team Incentive bonus plan, and comprehensive benefits package (for regular employees working 20+ hours a week).
