Metropolis is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to build the physical foundation of our Recognition Platform. In this role, you will lead the design, validation and testing of the electromechanical devices—including cameras, IoT sensors and access control systems—that power our field-deployed machine learning. You will own the full hardware lifecycle, driving everything from prototyping and BOM management to verification and deployment. We are looking for an expert in mechatronics and parametric design tools who excels at solving complex thermal and weatherproofing challenges. If you have experience designing optical systems and are ready to collaborate across engineering teams to create industrial-grade products that define the Recognition Economy, we want to hear from you.

  • Lead mechanical design and test activities for all current and future Metropolis hardware platforms
  • Conceptualize, prototype and implement mechanical design solutions for new product design, product improvement and product changes
  • Coordinate with manufacturing and deployment teams to ensure smooth transition as product designs are updated
  • Produce/check design layouts, detail drawings, assembly drawings, bills of material, tolerance studies (GD&T) and parts lists
  • Create engineering reports documenting design efforts, verification plans and test results
  • Manage relationships with external (contract) engineering teams
  • BS or MS in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience as a mechanical engineer
  • Recent professional experience using commercial mCAD products such as Solidworks, Inventor, Creo or Onshape
  • Professional or academic experience using FEA packages for mechanical stress/strain and thermal-fluid analysis
  • Experience or exposure to design philosophy for plastic/metal injection molded parts, casting or other high-volume manufacturing modalities
  • Experience designing products with major optical components such as cameras or head-mounted displays
  • Basic understanding of computer programming in one or more modern languages (Python, Matlab, C, R, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences
  • Experience with common program management (MS Project, Visio, etc.) and productivity (Confluence, Jira, etc.) tools
  • Previous experience working inside innovative, high-growth environments is a plus
  • healthcare benefits
  • a 401(k) plan
  • short-term and long-term disability coverage
  • basic life insurance
