About The Position

At Raytheon, the foundation of everything we do is rooted in our values and a higher calling to help our nation and allies defend freedoms and deter aggression. We bring the strength of more than 100 years of experience and renowned engineering expertise to meet the needs of today’s mission and stay ahead of tomorrow’s threat. Our team solves tough, meaningful problems that create a safer, more secure world. The Advanced Airframes Department within Raytheon Hardware Engineering provides Mechanical Engineering support to develop solutions for products across the Raytheon portfolio. Our core mechanical engineering responsibilities include requirements/conceptual development, design, integration, and test support. We partner with several Mechanical Product Team departments to provide full system solutions. The Advanced Airframes Department is currently hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer that will be located on site in Tucson, Arizona. Tasks will include design, integration, and test of mechanical-focused hardware using computer-aided design, mechanical analyses, and consistent coordination and communication across engineering teams to ensure successful hardware performance, usually demonstrated through flight tests. This role may also include leading small teams in the completion of above tasks.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), or basic tolerance analyses, and/or drawing practices and interpretation for mechanical hardware.
  • Experience with CAD design tools and best practices.
  • Experience overseeing suppliers in the fabrication and production of mechanical hardware.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM)
  • Existing DoD Secret or Top-Secret Clearance.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for technical analysis, data sorting/plotting, and technical documentation.
  • Experience in airframe development, electronics packaging, and mechanisms for missiles or similar applications.
  • Computer-aided Design (CAD) experience in Creo Parametric and Windchill.
  • Experience with thermal and structural analyses or with analysts to specify requirements and design to environments.
  • Demonstrated collaboration with cross-disciplined teams, using trust, respect, and innovation to drive results towards a shared vision.
  • Experience with effective communication (written and verbal) during collaboration with others to document design actions and results, to perform trade studies, and to communicate with program management and customers through presentations and reports.
  • Leadership experience over small teams (4-6 people).
  • Experience managing suppliers in the development of medium complexity sub-systems.
  • Experience with Earned Value and/or as a Control Account Manager to manage the cost and schedule for a project.

Responsibilities

  • Work across engineering disciplines to propose, design, develop, integrate, and test hardware within the Advanced Airframes mechanical design department
  • Contribute to one or more of our contract-funded and independent research efforts, each of which is in a different phase of development (proposal, design, and integration/test). Engineers are generally assigned to one effort at a time but may work multiple efforts over the course of several years
  • You will work autonomously with limited oversight.
  • Communicate across disciplines, working with diverse engineering team members and suppliers to analyze, model, and document the design technical data package (TDP) and its capabilities and compliance to requirements
  • Work under limited supervision and act as the responsible engineer often in a project management role over entire subsystems within an effort. This often requires the ability to direct, delegate and review the work of other engineers.
  • Develop technical solutions to a wide range of complex problems related to the entire product life cycle including design, manufacture, integration and test and design solutions for multiple systems
  • Occasional travel to suppliers may be required to resolve production issues, technical performance issues or attend critical program engineering reviews
  • Coach and review the work of early career engineers.
