About The Position

In this role you will be joining the R&D equipment design team, focused on partnering with Research Science and Process Development to deliver in-house hardware platforms to maximize learnings across the entire CDR process. You would be directly moving the needle on Heirloom’s core technology to enable a low-cost, scalable, and reliable design to meet our goal of removing 1 billion tons of CO2 by 2035. In this role, you will be expected to constantly challenge our assumptions and push the limits of design and manufacturing to achieve our ultimate targets. As part of the R&D equipment design team, you will independently lead complex electro-mechanical subsystems through the entire product lifecycle with learning rate as a key driver. You will design low-volume parts for challenging environments, produced via a variety of manufacturing processes including but not limited to: welding, sheet metal stamping, casting, roll forming, extrusions, etc.. You will select and integrate automation equipment like motors, actuators, and sensors into your subsystem designs in tandem with our controls and software teams. Working with suppliers, equipment operators, and our supply chain team, you’ll provide in-depth design for manufacturing and operation feedback required to ensure that our designs are cost-efficient, robust, sustainable, and capable of producing high-quality learnings.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in designing products through their whole lifecycle
  • A passion for electro-mechanical product design, creative problem-solving, and driving innovation to create simple, novel, robust, and low-cost designs
  • Strong engineering fundamentals to solve technically complex problems using first principles, data-driven methodologies
  • Experience with designing for harsh industrial conditions (ex. high temperatures over 800C, high pressure, chemical compatibility)
  • Experience with iterative design and fast prototyping cycles
  • Experience with engineering analyses, tools & methods like or similar to tolerance studies, FEA, fatigue analysis, root cause analysis, etc.
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate 2D drawings aligned with production and inspection standards, with proper use of GD&T.
  • Proven track record of working cross-functionally to balance competing requirements and design priorities
  • Strong project management skills with proven track record of managing complex projects either as a project or technical lead
  • A passion for mentoring teammates, driving best practices and standards within a team, and encouraging the team to stay motivated through challenges
  • Ability to take full ownership of your subsystem's performance and deliver high-quality work on time
