About The Position

The Senior Manager, Technical Services, collaborates with the Chief Collection Management Officer to ensure consistent system-wide service and implement new processes and initiatives. This position provides strategic leadership for Technical Services operations, including planning, directing, and managing several business units and a materials budget exceeding $7 million. The Senior Manager conducts regular meetings with managers and supervisors, engages with vendors and collaborative partners such as the Library Foundation, and ensures alignment with organizational priorities and best practices. Responsibilities include providing leadership in staffing, training, performance management and directing workflow for each area. The Senior Manager oversees the planning and maintenance of work systems, technology, procedures, and practices that enable optimal performance of employees and vendors. As a member of the Collection Management leadership team, the Senior Manager represents the department in communication and collaboration with other areas of the library.

Requirements

  • Have Master’s Degree in Library Science
  • Have Indiana Librarian Certification 2 – Branch or Department Head
  • Five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in library technical services or collection management.
  • Demonstrated leadership in technical services and collection management.
  • Strong knowledge of integrated library systems, acquisitions workflow, vendor services, and emerging technologies.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and project management skills required.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Staff Management
  • Recruit, hire, train and evaluate professional staff and managers; provide direction and coaching; resolve personnel issues.
  • Assess staff allocations and workloads to ensure efficiency and foster an inclusive and collaborative environment.
  • Conduct regular meetings with department managers and supervisors.
  • Ensure collaborative and efficient workflow between Technical Services departments and other departments to deliver the best patron service.
  • Financial Oversight & Compliance
  • Collaborative development and oversight of operating, bond and project budgets totaling $7M+;
  • Authorization expenditures and ensure compliance with State Board of Accounts requirements;
  • Coordinate grant activities and reporting with the Library Foundation and donors.
  • Technology & Systems Management
  • Provide collaborative leadership in implementating, maintening, and troubleshooting technical services systems (e.g., Polaris, MyTurn, OCLC, collectionHQ).
  • Evaluate and implement technical services automation tools and process improvements.
  • Maintain high-level proficiency in ILS technical services functionality; ensure staff training on updates and enhancements; and sServe as primary liaison with IT and ILS vendors for issue for Acquisitions, Cataloging and Serials.
  • Vendor and Contract Administration
  • Manage contracts with consultants, vendors, legal team and internal partners (e.g. IT, Communications);
  • Develop processes and audits to ensure compliance and service quality.
  • Collection Strategy & Community Engagement
  • Research community demographics, direct collection development and management strategies, and evaluate staff and patron satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with Communications and Marketing to promote collections through newsletters, social media, and outreach.
  • Communicate collection news to library staff and patrons through presentations, SharePoint, emails, and branch site visits.
  • Policy Alignment & Strategic Initiatives
  • Ensure Technical Services departments (Acquisitions & Collection Development, Cataloging, Processing, and other collection management staff) stay within scope and alignment with library organizational values, strategic priorities and collection policies.
  • Monitor trends and best practices in technical services and collection management; share knowledge and recommend improvements.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Indy PL system-wide services, policies.
  • Recommend improvements to policies, workflows and technologies.
  • Able to work the normally scheduled work time for this position.
