About The Position

The Senior Manager, Platform Engineering – Compute & Operating Systems provides technical and people leadership for enterprise compute platforms, including Linux, Windows, Kubernetes, and containerized environments. This role is responsible for designing, securing, and modernizing operating system and compute platforms at scale while leading a full organizational structure of platform engineers and managers.

Requirements

  • Deep technical expertise in Linux and Windows operating systems in large enterprise environments.
  • Strong experience with Kubernetes and container platforms, including operations, lifecycle management, and platform design.
  • Proven experience designing and managing hardened operating system environments.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles and automation frameworks.
  • Experience supporting mixed compute environments, including containerized platforms, traditional VMs, and iSeries systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large, diverse teams (20–30 people), including managing managers and senior technical leaders.
  • Designs, executes, and reports on platform and system testing to ensure compute environments meet business and security requirements.
  • Monitors, diagnoses, and resolves complex platform and operating system issues.
  • Demonstrates a strong change mindset and successfully leads teams through platform transformation initiatives.
  • Understands business context, organizational structures, and application needs to align compute platforms with enterprise goals.
  • Documents current-state and future-state platform architectures and processes.
  • Maintains platform security, integrity, availability, compliance, and continuity.
  • Leads detection, analysis, and remediation of platform-related security incidents and vulnerabilities.
  • Produces clear, effective technical and executive-level reports and documentation.
  • Conducts gap analysis and supports build-versus-buy decisions for platform technologies.
  • 3–5+ years of experience in a senior platform engineering, compute, or operating systems leadership role.
  • Prior experience leading enterprise compute or platform teams at scale.
  • Experience managing Kubernetes platforms and modern containerized environments in production.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategy, design, and execution of enterprise compute and operating system platforms, including Linux, Windows, Kubernetes, containers, and hybrid environments.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership for platform engineering initiatives, ensuring solutions follow infrastructure-as-code (IaC) principles and modern automation practices.
  • Manage and develop a full platform engineering organization of approximately 20–30 team members, including managers and senior engineers.
  • Lead leaders by managing multiple managers and building a scalable, growth-oriented team structure.
  • Own operating system lifecycle management, including provisioning, configuration, patching, hardening, and decommissioning.
  • Drive system hardening and security best practices in partnership with security teams, ensuring compliance with enterprise and regulatory standards.
  • Lead Kubernetes platform strategy, including cluster design, operations, reliability, and integration with application teams.
  • Support and modernize compute platforms across a diverse technology landscape, including containerized workloads, traditional operating systems, and iSeries environments.
  • Document complex “as-is” and “to-be” platform architectures, identifying gaps and defining roadmaps for modernization.
  • Manage a portfolio of platform initiatives and projects, balancing new platform development with operational stability.
  • Serve as a senior escalation point for complex compute, OS, and platform-related incidents.
  • Communicate platform strategy and execution plans clearly to technical teams, senior leadership, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Develop and manage budget plans related to compute platforms, tooling, and infrastructure investments.
  • Build business cases to justify platform investments, including automation, tooling, and modernization efforts.
  • Identify emerging technologies and industry trends in compute, containers, and operating systems and assess their applicability to the enterprise.
  • Drive continuous improvement by reviewing existing platform operations and implementing automation, standardization, and reliability improvements.
