About The Position

The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Senior Manager, Planning and Analysis in the Strategy Office of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY or Washington, DC (with a preference for NY). This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month. This is a two and a half-year term-limited position. The ACLU works on some of the most pressing civil rights and civil liberties issues facing American society today. The Strategy Office supports the ACLU to advance civil rights and liberties for all through the development and delivery of a bold strategy with shared goals that maximizes our impact today and in the long-term. The office resides within the Executive Department, which drives strategic direction, governance partnership, and a values-driven and inclusive culture. WHAT YOU'LL DO The Senior Manager, Planning and Analysis will report into the Director of Strategy & Innovation and take direction from other members of the Strategy Office based on assigned projects. The Senior Manager, Planning and Analysis will drive project management and implementation for large cross-departmental projects led by the Strategy Office, leading process design, workplan management, internal communications and change management, stakeholder coordination, and evaluation and learning. This role is fit for people with a passion for process, structure, and continuous improvement. Projects include but not limited to annual departmental planning and budgeting processes, strategy progress tracking, metrics tracking and evaluation, annual leadership retreats, and the coordination of cross-departmental external and internal reports. This position will participate in meetings and discussions of a highly strategic and confidential nature, handle highly sensitive confidential information including HR and budget data, will liaise with staff regarding team and organizational initiatives, and will create and manage the structure, schedule, and internal communication plans for related projects to drive their successful completion.

Requirements

  • Passion for process and structure, and a learning and continuous improvement mindset
  • Exceptional organizational, planning and project management skills with demonstrated ability to manage large, complex projects and prioritize effectively against simultaneous demands
  • Strong data management and analytical skills, including extensive experience working with Microsoft Excel (e.g., creating pivot charts, using multi-step formulas, building simple financial models) and maintaining complex data sets
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the demonstrated ability to synthesize complex information clearly and professionally; strong proficiency in use of Microsoft Word and Powerpoint to communicate complex concepts
  • Understanding of change management and how to make processes stick within a complex and fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work proactively in an ambiguous, dynamic, fast-paced, high-stakes environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sound judgement that contribute to a collaborative working environment
  • Familiarity with project management tools (e.g., Asana) and ability to support their integration into new teams

Responsibilities

  • Manage annual planning process and identify process improvements based on collected learnings. This includes managing the workplan, creating simple templates, coordinating department leads, and analyzing submissions.
  • Support the year open and mid-year budgeting process, managing critical data inputs with strong attention to detail, and supporting the synthesis of complex information into concise memos that enable decision-making for senior leadership.
  • Manage the process to track progress against strategic priorities, sharing results to drive accountability and identifying emerging challenges, opportunities, and learnings for continuous improvement.
  • Manage data collection processes and systems to track and report on key metrics, identifying opportunities for systems and process improvement to enable evidence-driven decision-making at all levels.
  • Develop written memos and presentations for senior audiences, including the annual strategy and budget memo for the National Board.
  • Partner in the design and preparation of annual leadership retreats by supporting agenda development, speaker coordination, and program content development.
  • Inject project management rigor into the Strategy Office by developing consistent ways of working, process improvements, and internal coordination strategies.
  • Develop relationships with other project managers and professional groups within the organization to share best practices and ensure ways of working align with ACLU accessibility, diversity, and inclusion guidelines.
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned, driving cross-functional initiatives from scoping through execution — coordinating stakeholders, removing blockers, and ensuring on-time, on-budget delivery.
