About The Position

The Senior Manager of Tax is a senior leader within the Finance organization, responsible for overseeing Cavender's company-wide tax strategy, compliance, reporting, and planning. Reporting directly to the VP Finance Controller, this role ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations while providing strategic guidance to leadership as the company operates within an increasingly complex environment, including a potential Up-C public company structure. This role requires deep technical tax expertise combined with strong leadership, communication, and judgment. The Senior Manager of Tax will oversee the company's tax function end to end, including navigating complex tax technical considerations, managing financial statement auditors, and communicating effectively with executive leadership. This position partners closely with Finance, Accounting, Legal, and Operations to support strategic initiatives, manage audits, and establish scalable tax processes and controls appropriate for a public-company environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field; CPA, MBA, or advanced tax certification strongly preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressive tax experience, including significant exposure to corporate income tax, multi-state taxation, and complex entity structures.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a tax function or serving in a senior tax role within a large, complex organization or public-company environment.
  • Strong technical expertise in ASC 740 income tax accounting, financial statement reporting, and audit support.
  • Experience with partnership tax and complex ownership structures.
  • Strong technical knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations impacting retail and multi-entity organizations.
  • Proven ability to manage financial statement auditors and external advisors.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax matters to non-tax leaders, executive management, and governance bodies.
  • Ability to manage complex projects, competing deadlines, and cross-functional workstreams.

Responsibilities

  • Support the “Cavender's Culture” and drive our Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Oversee all federal, state, and local tax matters, including corporate income tax, partnership tax considerations, sales and use tax, property tax, and franchise tax.
  • Oversee the company's tax function, including developing and maintaining tax processes and internal controls, with a strong emphasis on ASC 740 income tax accounting and reporting.
  • Lead income tax provision activities, including ASC 740 calculations, supporting schedules, journal entries, disclosures, and coordination with financial statement auditors.
  • Manage support provided by our Big 4 external tax partners.
  • Manage the preparation, review, and filing of complex tax returns, estimated payments, and extensions.
  • Lead tax planning initiatives to support long-term business growth, capital structure considerations, and strategic decision-making, particularly in the context of an Up-C structure.
  • Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations, evaluate potential impacts to Cavender's, and update processes and documentation as needed.
  • Manage tax audits and governmental inquiries, serving as the primary point of contact and ensuring accurate responses and timely resolution.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support new store openings, remodels, inventory processes, technology initiatives, and other business activities with tax implications.
  • Partner with external tax advisors, auditors, and regulatory agencies as needed.
  • Develop, document, and maintain strong internal controls, policies, and compliance procedures.
  • Evaluate and implement systems, tools, and process improvements to streamline tax operations and reporting.
  • Support executive leadership and governance bodies by translating complex tax matters into clear, actionable insights.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop tax team members, promoting both technical expertise and professional growth.
