About The Position

Reach Out and Read Northeast is seeking an experienced Senior Manager of Development to serve as a key partner to the Regional Director of Development. This is a high-impact, execution-focused role built for getting work across the finish line — one that calls for deep ownership, independent judgment, and organizational instincts woven into every task. Reporting directly to the Regional Director of Development, this role will anchor the Northeast development team by managing a major gifts portfolio, owning development operations and CRM integrity, and providing broad support across fundraising priorities. The ideal candidate brings substantial experience in development, a deep commitment to the mission, and the confidence to operate without heavy supervision. They thrive on deliverable work, take pride in maintaining excellent systems, and understand that the behind-the-scenes infrastructure of a development office is what makes ambitious fundraising possible. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to do meaningful work in a mission-driven environment, partner closely with passionate leadership, and help grow the philanthropic foundation that puts books in the hands of children across the Northeast.

Requirements

  • Commitment to increasing equity in opportunity and outcomes for children and a recognition of factors known to significantly impact differential outcomes for children, including race, ethnicity, language, and socio-economic status.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in nonprofit development, with a track record of managing donor relationships and supporting fundraising operations.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills; you are someone who keeps meticulous records, follows through consistently, and takes pride in reliable execution.
  • Experience managing donor portfolios and conducting donor stewardship activities, with comfort in donor-facing settings when needed.
  • Proficiency in Salesforce or a comparable CRM; you understand the value of clean data and know how to keep it that way.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight — you don’t need to be told what to do twice, and you’re comfortable taking initiative in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to represent the organization professionally with donors and partners.
  • A collaborative, mission-driven mindset; you believe in the work, trust the strategy, and get things done.

  • Experience with the Northeast philanthropic landscape — including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine — is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 30-50 major gift prospects and donors, cultivating and stewarding relationships to deepen engagement and grow philanthropic support.
  • Coordinate donor touchpoints, acknowledgments, and follow-up for major and individual giving, ensuring a high-touch experience for priority supporters.
  • Participate in donor-facing meetings and represent the organization
  • Support moves management, tracking donor progress through the pipeline in Salesforce with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Serve as the primary steward of Salesforce for the Northeast team, ensuring donor data, gift records, and portfolio information are accurate, up-to-date, and actionable.
  • Oversee gift acknowledgment processes, ensuring timely and accurate thank-you letters and tax receipts for all donors.
  • Maintain and monitor development reporting, flagging key trends and ensuring the Regional Director has clean data to inform strategy.
  • Coordinate with national office on gift processing, acknowledgment standards, and data integrity protocols.
  • Aid the Development Director in developing and following a Development Handbook for the Northeast Development team
  • Assist with grant management, events, book donation coordination, and other development priorities as assigned.
  • Support the Regional Director in implementing the annual development strategy, tracking goals, and flagging opportunities.
