About The Position

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Programs Manager has overall responsibility for developing, implementing, and maintaining robust EHS programs (i.e., Environmental and Occupational Safety) at GE Vernova Hitachi (GVH) Nuclear Energy's business level as well as leading operational EHS for GVH's Wilmington, NC site. In this role you will lead a team of approximately 10 EHS professionals that are responsible for environmental and occupational safety at our main site in Wilmington, several satellite locations, and services work at customer sites. This is a fully in-person role based in Wilmington NC.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college within a relevant field of study
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in a technical, manufacturing, operations, or military role
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an environmental, health, and/or safety discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of leadership experience in assignments involving regulatory activities
  • Ability to wear protective clothing in accordance with site requirements.
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs multiple times per day.
  • Ability to operate a computer.
  • Ability to maintain after hours cell phone availability
  • Ability and willingness to maintain Emergency Response Organization (ERO) qualifications
  • This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. GE will require proof of status prior to employment

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental, or related EHS /Engineering field
  • Strong background in regulatory compliance, preferably in the nuclear industry
  • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist or other EHS certification credential
  • Knowledge of federal, provincial, municipal EHS regulations and codes/standards, including familiarity with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 requirements.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interface at all levels of the organization, as well as organizations outside of GE (regulatory agencies)
  • Experience developing environmental impact studies
  • Experience with case management and Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
  • Strong computer and database skills, including Microsoft Suite.
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Cross-functional supervisory or project leadership experience.
  • Proven ability to create real and positive change.
  • Lean and/or Six Sigma certification

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and communicate EHS related strategy across the business.
  • Contribute to the overall business strategy, including involvement in long-term planning and management of complex issues.
  • Ensure robust performance and compliance with regulatory requirements established by Federal, State, and local agencies, including all aspects of Environmental, Health and Safety
  • Ensure compliance with NRC Special Nuclear Material (SNM) licenses per 10CFR Part 70 as it pertains to Environment, Health and Safety.
  • Interface with regulators, customers, community partners, suppliers, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assure safe operations, including adherence to strict industrial practices.
  • Promote cross functional collaboration to drive continuous improvement and standardization of existing programs, procedures, and tools to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and GEV best practices
  • Identify and implement programs to reduce exposure to future EHS and nuclear regulatory liabilities.
  • Manage existing environmental and occupational liabilities to ensure regulatory compliance and minimize risk.
  • Supervise the development and implementation of procedures and systems for personnel to support facility in safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner.
  • Manage team activities and resources to ensure support of regulatory and business priorities.
  • Achieve high internal and external customer satisfaction.
  • Drive continuous improvement through lean and Human Performance (HU) processes.
  • Ensure ongoing evolution of observation programs and training plans to maximize workforce capability.
  • Visible leader and participant in robust lean and observation programs.

  • Actively own implementation of EHS programs and procedures to ensure company compliance.
  • Drive facility readiness for internal and external audits, customer visits and project reviews by managing EHS procedural compliance, training, compliance programs and housekeeping.
  • Ensure non-resident work force and project personnel are trained and following all site practices, work rules and safety procedures.
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Administer and manage the site’s GenSuite EHS compliance tracking programs and record keeping systems. These systems include EHS management systems (Framework 2.0), audits, training documentation, waste management, injury and illness record-keeping, incident investigation, and lead non-conformance analysis.
  • Interface with medical case management, worker compensation and occupational medical clinic organizations as required.
  • Assure all regulatory required reports and submittals are filed timely and accurately.
  • Manage the handling and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes in compliance with federal, provincial, municipal and GE requirements.
  • Drive focus on goal of minimizing waste quantities.
  • Maintain appropriate waste profiles for all waste streams via GE Corporate approved vendors.
  • Support, review, revise, and implementation of EHS programs and procedures to ensure federal, provincial, municipal, as well as company compliance. Disciplines include Asbestos, Hazardous Material, Electrical Safety, Crane Lifting/Rigging, Confined Space, Work at Heights, Lockout/Tagout, and Contractor Safety.
  • Develop and lead training programs for assigned program areas
  • Evaluate facility EHS conditions, assess and audit risks, analyze trends and performance and develop appropriate corrective-action / continuous improvement plans
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with regulatory agencies
  • Track progress against EHS metrics and goals
  • Other relevant duties as assigned
