About The Position

At American Express, our culture is built on a 175-year history of innovation, shared values and Leadership Behaviors, and an unwavering commitment to back our customers, communities, and colleagues. As part of Team Amex, you'll experience this powerful backing with comprehensive support for your holistic well-being and many opportunities to learn new skills, develop as a leader, and grow your career. Here, your voice and ideas matter, your work makes an impact, and together, you will help us define the future of American Express. How will you make an impact in this role? This role is part of the newly formed Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) Data Office. As a Senior Data Strategy and Product Manager, you are part of a team responsible for supporting activities for the day-to-day compliance with the Enterprise Data Management Operating Policy within ETS. You and your team will be responsible for enabling the efficient, scalable execution of enterprise data governance across ETS by translating data policy and risk expectations into practical procedures, supporting & improving data products, removing manual overhead, and championing ETS’ needs to the enterprise. In this role, you will partner closely with Data Stewards and Custodians, Enterprise Architecture, product managers, and the Enterprise Data Office to ensure data governance is operationalized within business-as-usual activities and serve as a hands-on subject matter expert for enterprise data governance products (i.e., applications), providing guidance on when, how, and why to use specific products (e.g., lineage, metadata, data quality tools). You will identify gaps, inefficiencies, and adoption challenges in existing tools and processes, and partner with enterprise product teams to influence enhancements that better meet ETS needs. The role also plays a key part in defining and maturing foundational data governance assets for ETS, including taxonomies, metadata standards, third-party data sharing procedures, and reusable governance patterns. You will focus on reducing manual effort (including the use of AI to enable governance activities), improving consistency, and enabling repeatable execution at scale, while ensuring alignment to enterprise policies, regulatory expectations, and the broader data risk management framework. Success in this role requires strong collaboration and influence across business, technology, and risk stakeholders, the ability to translate complex requirements into actionable guidance, and a bias toward scalable, tool-enabled solutions that reduce friction for delivery teams while strengthening risk management and compliance outcomes.

  • Ability to translate policy and standards into executable processes
  • Strong stakeholder management and influence skills
  • Experience leading & driving initiatives independently

Responsibilities

  • Act as an ETS SME and hands-on user of enterprise data governance tools (e.g., data catalog, lineage, data quality). Provide practical guidance on when, how, and why to use specific tools
  • Identify gaps, friction points, and adoption blockers in existing tools and partner with enterprise product owners to influence roadmap decisions based on ETS needs
  • Support proof-of-concepts to validate new capabilities before broader rollout
  • Lead & drive initiatives independently
  • Partner with ETS Data Stewards and Custodians to streamline execution of lineage, metadata, and control documentation
  • Develop advanced knowledge of the Enterprise Data Management Operating Policy and Standards in order to translate into clear ETS-specific procedures, playbooks, and execution patterns, without redefining policy
  • Define scalable approaches for recurring governance activities (e.g., critical data element governance onboarding, use of authorized sources, third-party data sharing)
  • Define and mature ETS-specific governance building blocks, aligned to enterprise standards and drive broader enterprise adoption where appropriate
  • Embed governance activities into BAU workflows (e.g., SDLC, intake, change management)
