About The Position

St. George Island State Park is looking for a self-motivated park service professional to fill a Senior Maintenance Mechanic position with experience in the building & construction trades, gas and diesel equipment maintenance, visitor services, and administration with a focus on maintenance and construction projects at St. George Island State Park (SGISP). SGISP is a 2,000 acre park on a narrow barrier island in Franklin County Florida. SGISP also manages the John Gorrie Museum and the Orman House Historic State Park in Apalachicola.

Requirements

  • KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Florida’s natural and cultural resources

  • The principles and techniques of the skilled building trades and mechanical repair work and of safety procedures required in maintenance and repair work

  • SKILL IN:

  • Operating a point of sale system and reconciling receipts; accurately preparing reports
  • Performing grounds and facility maintenance which includes but is not limited to mowing, weed eating, pressure washing, painting; utilizing power tools, including but not limited to, chain saws, drills
  • Basic plumbing, including but not limited to, repairing hose bibs, waterline repair
  • Basic electrical work, including but not limited to, replacing outlets and circuit breakers
  • Basic carpentry, including but not limited to, boardwalks and fences
  • Vehicle diagnostics, repair and fabrication
  • Heavy equipment diagnostics, maintenance & repair
  • Operating a variety of motorized equipment
  • Operation of computers and various software programs
  • Using tools and equipment in maintenance and repair work
  • Perform physical labor; which includes but not limited to cleaning restrooms, picking up trash, facility repairs and groundskeeping
  • Deal with visitor inquiries in a tactful and courteous manner; understand and apply rules, directives, policies, laws and regulations
  • Prepare reports; work independently with minimum supervision; plan, organize and coordinate work assignments
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Interacting with all internal and external customers and the general public in a professional, tactful and courteous manner
  • ABILITY TO:
  • Participate in resource management practices, which include non-native plant removal, application of herbicide; work outdoors
  • Perform a variety of skilled trade functions; read blueprints; install, maintain and repair electric motors, generators, and other mechanical equipment; take accurate measurements, troubleshoot, diagnose and repair small engines and other equipment including ATV’s, UTV’s Golf Carts, Trucks, Tractors, implements, RV electrical pedestals, household appliances, lift stations, well pumps, washing machines, water heaters, etc.
  • Conduct formal and informal maintenance training
  • Perform maintenance inspections; coordinate repairs; acquire materials and supplies needed to complete projects
  • Supervise maintenance projects as directed
  • Prepare and maintain maintenance logs and related correspondence
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Lift 40 pounds and assist in transporting items or other supplies 100 pounds or more
  • Work rotating shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends
  • Ability to diagnose small and large engine issues
  • Ability to properly wear a uniform
  • Successfully complete a background check and finger print check
  • Work in inclement weather
  • Valid Driver’s License

Responsibilities

  • Performs and assists in the oversight of repairs, maintenance and construction of park buildings; to include but not limited to carpentry, brick, cement, block, plumbing, electrical wiring, roofing, trim, framing, foundations, exterior and interior finish, painting, floors, septic systems, doors and windows.
  • Performs and assists in the oversight of maintenance and repairs to electric motors, generators, pumps, and compressors.
  • Installs and assists in the oversight of maintenance and repairs to valves, sinks, wash bowls, sewers and other sanitary fixtures.
  • Performs and assists in the oversight of maintenance and repairs of all vehicles and equipment, including cars, trucks, electric carts, tractors, mowers, sprayers, chainsaws, and all power tools.
  • Performs and assists in the oversight of repairs to air conditioning and heating equipment.
  • Operates all park maintenance equipment, including vehicles, tractors, saws, drills, presses, torches, welders, grinders and all tools.
  • Responsible for managing the park’s overall shop compound facilities and vehicle/equipment fleet used by entire team.
  • Prepares vehicles reports, maintenance logs and maintenance schedules.
  • Tracks bulk gas and oil inventories.
  • Prepares quotes, purchasing card paperwork and coding of charges in WORKS as necessary to secure materials for repair, maintenance and upkeep of park facilities, equipment and vehicles.
  • Works with management to oversee maintenance budgets and develop projects and funding requests.
  • Oversees Park Safety Inspections and addresses deficiencies noted.
  • Conducts and maintains inventories of materials and supplies needed
  • Researches, prepares and provides supervisor with timely corrective action plans.
  • Maintains effective park protection through organization and supervision of the park’s maintenance resources and equipment and supply inventories.
  • Patrols work area and examines tools and equipment to detect unsafe conditions or violations of safety rules.
  • Maintains safety records and trains others in safe use of equipment.
  • Maintain and conduct inspections of park security of gates, entrances, equipment and facilities; implements emergency procedures.
  • Provides training to staff and volunteers on the proper way to safely operate and maintain park equipment, tools and vehicles.
  • Participate in and support the park’s resource management program including, but not limited to, imperiled species management, exotic and nuisance species control, imperiled species management, prescribed fire, and erosion control.
  • Oversees the repair and maintenance of emergency firefighting equipment.
  • Explains the facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment and education; meets visitors, answers questions, provides information and directions.
  • Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations.
  • Provides natural and cultural history interpretive programs and services via guided tours.
  • Performs other related duties as required
