The Senior Indirect Tax Accountant supports and leads indirect tax compliance, audit defense, research, consulting, and strategic initiatives across the organization. This position has increased ownership and independence compared to a Staff-level role and is responsible for managing assigned indirect tax areas including sales and use tax, gross receipts, real and personal property taxes, business licenses, business incentives, and other miscellaneous taxes and fees. This position sits onsite 5 days a week in Grapevine, TX.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Four to six or more years of progressive indirect tax experience with a strong focus on sales and use tax.
  • Experience managing multi-state indirect tax compliance in a complex business environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform independent tax research and document technical positions.
  • Experience leading or supporting sales and use tax audits.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and take ownership of tasks through completion.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify discrepancies in data and documentation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with auditors, management, and cross-functional partners.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with strong problem-solving skills and adaptability to changing priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Public accounting experience.
  • Experience in a large corporate or multi-entity tax environment.
  • Working knowledge of indirect tax compliance software, with Vertex strongly preferred.
  • Experience reviewing indirect tax returns prepared by others.
  • Prior experience training or mentoring Staff or Senior-level tax professionals.
  • Exposure to property tax compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day indirect tax compliance for assigned jurisdictions and tax types, including coordination with outsourced compliance providers.
  • Prepare, review, and approve sales and use tax, property tax, & unclaimed property.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for routine jurisdictional audits, including direct communication with auditors and coordination of information requests.
  • Prepare and review correspondence relating to sales tax audits, Canadian provincial audits, appraisal districts, unclaimed property notices, and other indirect tax matters.
  • Analyze sales tax reserves, including interest and penalties, at least quarterly and update supporting documentation as needed.
  • Reconcile tax payments and accruals to ensure accuracy and proper allocation to internal accounts.
  • Independently research, analyze, interpret, and document indirect tax issues, including taxability of digital products and services and marketplace facilitator rules.
  • Lead tax system maintenance activities, including jurisdiction setup, product taxability, use tax mappings, tax matrices, and exemption and resale certificate processes.
  • Perform technical analyses to determine registration and filing requirements as the company expands into new states or jurisdictions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve compliance, audit readiness, system functionality, and overall department efficiency.
  • Provide training, guidance, and informal mentorship to Staff-level tax accountants.
  • Collaborate with internal partners across Finance, IT, Legal, and Operations to ensure timely and accurate indirect tax compliance.
  • Remain current on indirect tax law changes, best practices, and industry trends through continuing education and professional development.
