About The Position

Hawaiian Electric is currently establishing an External Applicant Pool, from which qualified applicants may be considered for a Senior Helper (AQ-Lineman) vacancy on the island of Oahu. Applicants must successfully pass an aptitude and skills assessment. Tentatively, the Construction and Skilled Trades (CAST) aptitude test sessions will be scheduled during the week(s) of May 4-15, 2026. Confirmed dates and times will be sent closer to the scheduled testing date – please be sure to provide your current email address when submitting your application. Applicants who achieve a qualifying CAST score will be invited to participate in a Job Sample Test (JST), which is tentatively, scheduled for June 2026 – more information will be forthcoming. Please submit your application for only one (1) of the preferred island locations. This is where the position will be located – all employment tests will be completed on this selected island and if selected, you will be required to reside on this island. Interested employees should not apply through this external applicant pool but through the internal job requisitions postings when position vacancies become available. JOB FUNCTION: Performs unskilled and semi-skilled work under direct or indirect supervision. Assists personnel of higher classifications in the construction, installation, maintenance and operations of Company facilities in order to acquire necessary knowledge for indentureship in the trade.

Requirements

  • Must pass the Edison Electric Institute Construction & Skilled Trades Selection System (CAST).
  • Note: Employees who have taken and passed the Differential Aptitude Test (DAT) do not need to take the CAST.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Driver Safety Policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.
  • Must pass Job Sample Test.
  • Ability to perceive colors necessary for the safe performance of duties (i.e., primary colors sightedness, basic colors for driving).
  • Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual or others.
  • Will be required to be transported by helicopter.
  • Will be required to train, integrate and perform as a team member.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine tasks under direct or indirect supervision. Assists personnel of higher classifications in their regularly assigned tasks in order to acquire necessary knowledge for indentureship in the trade (use of checklist).
  • Drives Company vehicles. May drive a truck carrying personnel and/or materials. If qualified, operates trucks or equipment of a higher classification.
  • Lifts and carries materials, tools and equipment.
  • Uses hand tools such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, pliers, punches, wrenches, etc.
  • Uses power tools such as electric/pneumatic drills, guns, impact wrenches, etc.
  • Is required to be transported by helicopter.
  • May be trained to operate equipment, etc.
  • Performs similar and incidental duties as required.
  • Assume an emergency management role, as assigned, and perform specific assignments or functions, as needed, in an event of an emergency, not to include routine trouble calls/callouts.
