About The Position

This position in Sargent & Lundy’s Consulting group focuses on utility planning and advisory projects. Responsibilities include transmission system planning and analysis, conducting studies in load flow, stability, short circuit, and electromagnetic transients (EMT) for ISO/RTO and electric utility clients. The role also involves preparing new generator interconnection applications, which includes developing conceptual single line diagrams, verifying reactive power requirements, and creating steady-state, dynamic, and short circuit models. Additionally, the consultant will review ISO feasibility and system impact studies to guide clients who are ISO Interconnection Customers. The position also requires leading others in leveraging modern tools like automation and AI to enhance workflows, minimize rework, and deliver cost-effective designs, including directing process-improvement work and guiding the application of AI or agentic AI tools while ensuring accuracy.

Requirements

A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and sufficient industry experience is considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
A minimum of 6 years relevant power systems engineering experience with utility or consultant.
Experience in load flow and contingency analysis to identify transmission thermal and voltage constraints and to identify transfer capability limits.
Experience using transmission planning software for load flow modeling, contingency analysis, and stability analysis using PSS/E, PSLF, TARA.
Willing or able to lead others who use modern tools.
Expected to lead others in taking engineering problems from issue to solution by setting expectations for using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
Leaders in these roles often direct automation and process-improvement work, for example, how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation and guiding when and how AI or agentic AI tools are used while ensuring results are checked.

Nice To Haves

Experience in stability analysis to identify critical clearing times, identify voltage constraints and analyze power system damping.
Experience in electromagnetic transient analysis using PSCAD.
Experience in short circuit analysis and using software programs CAPE or ASPEN.
Knowledge of power regions and ISOs/RTOs, such as: PJM, MISO, NYISO, ERCOT, SPP, CAISO, WECC, SERC, ISO-NE.
Experience in Python, Java Script, or other scripting languages.
Overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs.
Additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows.

Responsibilities
