About The Position

The Doctors Company is seeking a Senior Governance Specialist to join our team. This is a hybrid or remote opportunity depending on the final candidate's location from the company's offices. The Senior Governance Specialist is responsible for designing, deploying, and operationalizing enterprise data governance programs across the organization. This role owns the hands-on implementation of governance frameworks, metadata management, data lineage, data quality controls, and stewardship models — working across platforms, business units, and regulatory requirements to ensure that data is trusted, traceable, compliant, and analytics-ready. The role operates in a platform-agnostic manner, applying governance best practices regardless of the tooling the enterprise adopts, and serves as the primary execution anchor for the governance program.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in data governance, metadata management, or data management, with at least 5 years in a hands-on implementation role
  • Demonstrated experience implementing enterprise governance frameworks aligned to DAMA-DMBOK, DCAM, or equivalent standards
  • Deep hands-on expertise with at least two enterprise governance or metadata catalog platforms (e.g., Collibra, Microsoft Purview, Alation, Atlan, Informatica Axon, IBM Knowledge Catalog, or equivalent)
  • Experience configuring governance operating models: data domains, stewardship communities, ownership workflows, RACI frameworks, and policy enforcement mechanisms
  • Proven ability to build and manage Business Glossaries, Critical Data Elements (CDEs), data dictionaries, and classification taxonomies at enterprise scale
  • Hands-on experience implementing automated end-to-end data lineage from source systems through transformation layers to reporting and analytics outputs
  • Experience establishing data quality frameworks: rule definition, profiling, automated controls, quality scorecards, and issue management workflows
  • Integration experience connecting governance platforms to cloud data platforms, ETL/ELT pipelines, data warehouses, BI tools, and source systems
  • Demonstrated regulatory compliance delivery: GDPR, HIPAA, SOX, SOC 2, CCPA, or equivalent, including audit-readiness evidence and data classification controls
  • Experience embedding governance controls into CI/CD and DevOps pipelines, enabling automated policy enforcement at the point of data delivery
  • CDMP certification (DAMA) or equivalent formal governance credential
  • Strong stakeholder communication skills: able to translate governance requirements into accessible language and drive adoption across technical and non-technical audiences

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in financial services, healthcare, insurance, or other highly regulated industries
  • Familiarity with AI and ML governance concepts: model lineage, feature store governance, bias/fairness documentation, and NIST AI RMF alignment
  • Experience developing SOPs, onboarding guides, governance playbooks, and training materials that enable sustainable stewardship programs
  • Familiarity with DataOps and data product patterns (Data Mesh, Data-as-a-Product)
  • MS or BS in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Management, or related field

Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy enterprise data governance frameworks aligned to DAMA-DMBOK or DCAM, including operating model, decision rights, policies, and standards — platform-agnostic in approach.
  • Configure and administer governance platforms to support business glossaries, data domains, critical data elements (CDEs), data dictionaries, and stewardship workflows.
  • Establish metadata management strategies: automated harvesting, enrichment, classification, and ownership assignment across enterprise data assets.
  • Measure and report governance KPIs, maturity metrics, catalog adoption, and stewardship coverage to governance leadership and business stakeholders.
  • Implement and maintain automated end-to-end data lineage from source systems through all transformation layers to reporting, analytics, and AI/ML outputs.
  • Ensure full traceability and impact analysis for critical data elements, supporting both operational and regulatory audit requirements.
  • Map governance controls to applicable regulatory frameworks, maintaining a living control-to-requirement traceability matrix and audit-readiness artifacts.
  • Partner with Legal, Compliance, Privacy, and Security teams to ensure governance controls align with organizational risk posture and evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Define and operationalize data quality frameworks: profiling rules, thresholds, completeness and accuracy checks, scorecards, and automated issue management workflows.
  • Embed governance and quality controls directly into data engineering pipelines and CI/CD workflows, ensuring governance is part of the delivery process rather than a post-hoc review.
  • Partner with operations and engineering to reduce data incidents, latency, and reliability gaps through systematic root-cause resolution.
  • Serve as subject matter expert and primary administrator for the enterprise’s governance tooling ecosystem — evaluating, configuring, optimizing, and supporting platforms as organizational needs evolve.
  • Integrate governance platforms with cloud data platforms, ETL/ELT pipelines, data warehouses, BI tools, and source systems to ensure seamless metadata flow and governance coverage.
  • Continuously evaluate tooling modernization opportunities and maintain platform governance: access controls, configuration documentation, and performance optimization.
  • Support BI and analytics delivery to business functions through reliable, governed data foundations as needed.
  • Onboard, enable, and continuously support data stewards and data owners across business units — defining RACI models, conducting training, and building governance playbooks that make stewardship sustainable.
  • Drive culture of governance and data-driven discipline across the organization: identify early adopters, run focused pilots, demonstrate measurable value, and build peer-to-peer advocacy across business domains.
  • Provide clear, transparent communication and structured engagement routines with governance leadership and business stakeholders.
  • Develop teams, training materials, and documentation as necessary to drive a strong data governance culture across the business.
