About The Position

Senior Equipment Operator District One/District Maintenance/Bartow Operations Center This position will operate and maintain heavy equipment, perform manual labor, and complete daily reports. This position leads and trains crew members while planning work, selecting materials, and maintaining records.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Mathematical calculations, Standard Safety Rules and Procedures, The procedures, techniques, and use of equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges, and/or other highway structures
  • Skills in: Operating a variety of hand and power tools, Operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment and vehicles, Completing job related reports and forms, Communicating both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions
  • Ability to: Operate a variety of heavy equipment, Train others, Read and understand job related materials, Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others, Lift, carry and handle up to 50 pounds, Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis, Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic, Stand for an extended period of time.
  • High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency, valid Class "A" Commercial Drivers License, and four years of infrastructure construction or maintenance experience. An additional year of experience, for a total of five years of experience, in infrastructure construction or maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
  • This position requires a valid Class A driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
  • Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies when necessary. Incumbent may be required to work on-call. While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. A valid Class “A” CDL is required. Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team.

Responsibilities

  • Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to; road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance. Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew. Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, work flows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees. Maintains records of operation. Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
