Requirements

Knowledge of mathematical calculations.
Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures.
Knowledge of procedures, techniques and use of equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
Skilled in operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment and vehicles.
Skilled in completing job related reports and forms.
Skilled in communicating both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
Ability to train others.
Ability to read and understand job related materials.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl, or bend on a frequent basis.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations.
A valid Class "A" CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is required at time of hire.
Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
Requires two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
This position requires a valid Class “A” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance.
Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated including but not limited to check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
Assists in the repair of operated equipment. Cleans and washes equipment.
Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew.
Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
Maintains records of operation.
Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
