Requirements

  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations.
  • Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures.
  • Knowledge of procedures, techniques and use of equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Skilled in operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment and vehicles.
  • Skilled in completing job related reports and forms.
  • Skilled in communicating both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to train others.
  • Ability to read and understand job related materials.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl, or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
  • This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations.
  • A valid Class "A" CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is required at time of hire.
  • Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
  • Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Requires two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • This position requires a valid Class “A” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance.
  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated including but not limited to check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
  • Assists in the repair of operated equipment. Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew.
  • Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
  • Maintains records of operation.
  • Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
