Position Overview The Senior Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager is the companywide authority for environmental, health, safety, and process safety risk management across multi-site operations. This role leads the design, governance, and continuous improvement of EHS programs within an FDA-regulated nutraceutical manufacturing environment, ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, WDNR, NFPA, FDA, and related regulatory requirements. The Senior EHS Manager is empowered to require corrective actions, delay startup, or halt operations where unacceptable risk exists, and partners closely with Operations, Engineering, Quality, and HR to embed EHS requirements into capital projects, change controls, and companywide risk-reduction initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety & Environmental Health or related degree required
  • 7-10+ years of progressive EHS leadership experience in manufacturing environments
  • Demonstrated experience supporting multi-site or enterprise-level operations
  • Experience in FDA-regulated food, nutraceutical, or pharmaceutical manufacturing required
  • Expert knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, including OSHA, EPA, WDNR, NFPA, and applicable FDA requirements (21 CFR 110, 111, and 117) within a regulated manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated expertise in environmental permitting, compliance assurance, regulatory reporting, and record-keeping across multi-site operations
  • Strong leadership across diverse teams and locations
  • Excellent communication and training abilities
  • Proven audit, compliance, and regulatory management experience
  • Ability to influence and build safety culture companywide
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced understanding of process safety, industrial hazards, and risk management principles, including PSM, RMP, combustible dust, machine safety, and high-energy systems
  • Experience overseeing workers’ compensation programs, injury management, and claim trend analysis to support injury reduction and cost containment

Responsibilities

  • Establish, govern, and continuously improve a companywide EHS management system aligned with regulatory requirements, engineering standards, and recognized industry best practices
  • Serve as the primary EHS advisor and technical authority to Engineering, Operations, Quality, HR, and senior leadership
  • Define EHS objectives, performance indicators, and risk-based improvement initiatives aligned with operational and business priorities
  • Provide leadership visibility, guidance, and accountability for EHS performance across all manufacturing locations
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, WDNR, and applicable state and local environmental and safety regulations
  • Ensure alignment of EHS programs with FDA requirements (21 CFR 110, 111, and 117) within a nutraceutical manufacturing environment
  • Lead regulatory inspections, audits, and enforcement interactions, serving as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies
  • Oversee environmental permitting, reporting, and compliance obligations across all operating locations
  • Serve as system owner and technical authority for OSHA Process Safety Management (29 CFR 1910.119) and EPA Risk Management Programs
  • Ensure effective implementation of all PSM elements, including Process Hazard Analysis, Mechanical Integrity, Operating Procedures, Management of Change, and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews
  • Lead, approve, and maintain Dust Hazard Analyses in accordance with NFPA 652 and related combustible dust standards
  • Act as a required EHS approver for capital project design reviews, equipment procurement, and management of change prior to startup or commissioning
  • Integrate EHS requirements into engineering design standards, capital project execution, and process modifications
  • Partner with Engineering and Operations to identify, assess, and mitigate risk during project development and implementation
  • Serve as the environmental authority for industrial wastewater and pretreatment operations, ensuring compliance with Clean Water Act and local POTW requirements
  • Retain accountability for investigation of serious injuries, near-misses, and process safety events, ensuring corrective actions address root causes and are sustained
  • Analyze trends, leading indicators, and system performance data to drive continuous improvement
  • Champion a proactive, prevention-focused safety culture across all manufacturing locations
  • Exercise delegated authority to intervene in operations, delay startup, or halt activities where safety, environmental, or process risks exceed acceptable thresholds
