About The Position

The New York Times is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager, Enterprise Automation to lead a multidisciplinary group of engineers and analysts focused on process excellence, automation, and measurable operational improvement across the organization. This role owns how our automation platforms, workflow tools, and intelligent agents are used to redesign, improve, and automate core business processes — from Finance and HR to Enterprise Technology, Marketing, and other business functions — the end goal is that work is faster, more reliable, and easier to manage and scale. You will partner with business leaders across the company. You will balance strategy and execution: shaping a portfolio of high‑impact initiatives while also ensuring that individual automations are robust, supportable, and deliver the outcomes we commit to. If you are excited by process improvement, care deeply about reliability, user experience, and enjoy shaping automation capabilities to do more, we'd love to hear from you.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in technology, process improvement, or automation‑focused roles, including 3+ years managing engineers, analysts, or similar technical teams.
  • Demonstrated experience leading process redesign and automation initiatives that delivered measurable improvements in capacity, quality, or cycle time.
  • Hands‑on familiarity with one or more automation technologies, such as scripting languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript), iPaaS platforms, workflow engines, RPA tools, or AI‑based agents.
  • Experience with enterprise applications and SaaS ecosystems, and how automations interact with systems like Workday, Slack, Google Workplace, collaboration tools, ticketing platforms, and data services.
  • Experience working closely with a variety of stakeholders on cross‑functional initiatives (for example, Finance, HR, Legal, Advertising, Marketing, Sales, and other business functions).

Nice To Haves

  • Background in Lean, Six Sigma, or similar process improvement frameworks applied in technology or operations environments.

Responsibilities

  • You will own the Enterprise Automation strategy and roadmap, aligning with business priorities.
  • You will maintain a transparent, prioritized portfolio of automation work based on value, risk, and reusability.
  • You will hire, develop, and lead engineers and analysts responsible for identifying, mapping, and improving business processes, and delivering automation solutions with clear, measurable business impact.
  • You will lead analysts and partners in documenting and redesigning workflows before automating them, simplifying and standardizing processes and creating clear current‑state and future‑state views.
  • You will run structured intake with business units to surface high‑value opportunities, capturing pain points, volumes, and risks; use this to identify the most impactful work for the team to take on.
  • You will ensure automation initiatives are tied to baseline metrics (e.g., capacity released, error reduction, cycle‑time improvement) and that benefits are measured and reported after implementation.
  • You will act as a trusted partner to senior leaders and operational teams, helping them identify and shape automation opportunities, navigate tradeoffs, and adopt delivered solutions effectively.
  • You will guide engineers in designing, building, and maintaining automations using approved platforms and patterns (e.g., scripting, iPaaS, workflow engines, RPA, AI agents - including Boomi, Glean, and Gemini / Vertex), with an emphasis on reusability and maintainability.
  • You will ensure automations are observable, well‑documented, and supportable, with appropriate logging, alerting, and runbooks; manage incident response and defect remediation for automation issues.
  • You will communicate with both technical and non‑technical audiences, ensuring stakeholders understand priorities, progress, and outcomes across the automation portfolio.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Head of Enterprise Technology.

Benefits

  • Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.
