About The Position

The Conversion Engineering team plays a critical role in improving the borrower experience and driving top-line performance. This team owns the Unified Funding Application experience, building and optimizing across the stack to provide borrowers with a seamless experience. They sit at the intersection of engineering, product, machine learning, and design to run experiments, build personalized experiences, and rapidly launch high-impact product features. With deep investments in automation and data-driven decision-making, the team's work directly impacts one of Upstart's most critical operating metrics: conversion rate.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of engineering management experience leading full-stack or frontend-leaning teams.
  • Proven success partnering with product and analytics to deliver measurable impact on customer-facing metrics.
  • Strong technical background with the ability to support and challenge technical decisions at a high level.
  • Excellent communication skills and a track record of collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Experience building and scaling web applications with a focus on user experience and experimentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading engineering teams in growth, funnel optimization, or personalization domains.
  • Prior exposure to A/B testing, machine learning integration, or high-scale experimentation frameworks.
  • Strong product mindset with a passion for understanding user behavior and making data-informed decisions.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, instrumentation, observability, and monitoring.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a high-performing team of 8+ engineers focused on transforming the application flow into a seamless, optimized, and personalized experience.
  • Own core borrower experiences from initial application through offer acceptance, shaping critical user touchpoints across multiple product lines.
  • Partner deeply with Product, Analytics, Machine Learning, Marketing, and Design to prioritize and launch high-impact A/B tests, personalization models, and product flows.
  • Drive cross-functional execution that keeps stakeholders informed and involved in order to make data-driven decisions.
  • Support and mentor engineers of all technical skill levels while fostering a culture of excellence, curiosity, and product-minded thinking.
  • Play a strategic role in technical decision-making, including challenging assumptions, validating approaches, and helping the team scale thoughtfully.
