About The Position

North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer’s mission. Available employment opportunities may range from administrative and logistical support to advanced technical positions. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physical, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy. Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day directions from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS. The Computing Directorate has an opening for a Business Operations Specialist with a focus on engineering experience to provide consulting services to the Livermore Computing (LC) user community on some of the world’s largest supercomputers. The successful candidate will serve as a high-level mentor, bridging the gap between decades of operational history and the next generation of engineers. The successful candidate will provide strategic guidance for post-Exascale High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure, ensuring that the critical "institutional memory" of the facility is preserved and utilized for future readiness. Addition assignments will also be made based on programmatic needs and individual interests or expertise of the individual.

Requirements

  • BS in computer science, or related field, or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge.
  • Extensive career as a Chief Engineer within the DOE or a similar high-stakes, large-scale technical environment.
  • Deep knowledge of electrical switchgear, high-efficiency power distribution, and advanced cooling loops.
  • Proven ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable advice for both technical teams and federal stakeholders.
  • Advanced writing and documentation skills.
  • Experience working effectively in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and implementing training frameworks for mid-career engineers, focusing on advanced troubleshooting and the nuances of complex mission-critical systems.
  • Mentoring peers and LLNS staff on high-stakes communications with vendors to ensure technical specifications remain aligned with cost and scope.
  • Providing expert guidance on infrastructure design for next-gen platforms, specifically addressing the extreme power density and precision liquid cooling requirements of post-Exascale systems.
  • Advising on Siting and Recapitalization projects to ensure new HPC installations meet long-term programmatic goals for floor loading, security, and network topology.
  • Leading internal audits and milestone reviews for multi-million-dollar modernization projects to ensure they are safe and in compliance with DOE orders.
  • Identifying "single points of failure" in facility infrastructure that may be overlooked by younger staff, leveraging deep operational history to maintain 24/7 mission-critical uptime.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
