About The Position

About the Team: The Sensors Division within STR focuses on the development and analysis of advanced sensor systems in the RF, acoustic, and electro-optical domains. This includes the design and development of novel sensors and advanced information processing techniques from ideation to prototype implementations. The Undersea Systems and Acoustics (USA) Group develops and delivers advanced undersea sensor and signal processing systems related to intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and counter-ISR applications. The Role: The USA Group is hiring an embedded signal processing engineer to design, develop, and test embedded software implementing signal processing algorithms for distributed undersea acoustic systems. Key to this role is the ability to span signal processing theory & concepts, software development and coding practices, and development on real-time embedded processing hardware ranging from low size-weight-and-power (SWAP) to high performance. Strong embedded coding with a range of languages (C++, python if supported, etc.) and experience implementing signal processing algorithms on low-power processors is expected. A successful candidate will also have working knowledge in multiple of the following areas: interfacing with analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters, analog and digital filters, build development containers, software development practices, mathematics, and/or scientific computing.

Requirements

  • Embedded Systems Expertise: Strong experience in developing software for embedded systems, particularly on ARM processors and DSP boards. Relevant experience may include for wearables and IOT devices
  • Real-Time Processing: Proven ability to design and implement real-time deterministic algorithms for acoustic signal processing
  • Programming Languages: Proficiency in low-level programming languages (C/C++) and high-level languages (MATLAB, Python)
  • Operating Systems: Experience with LINUX operating systems, particularly in embedded environments
  • Development Tools: Familiarity with development containers, version control systems (git), and task management tools (Jira)
  • Signal Processing Knowledge: Solid understanding of acoustic signal processing principles and techniques
  • Optimization Skills: Ability to optimize software for performance and resource constraints on low-SWAP processors
  • Shell Command Proficiency: Skilled in using shell commands for debugging, monitoring system resources, managing processes, logging system activities, scripting routines, and debugging in Linux-based operating systems
  • Interface Proficiency: Proficiency with I2C, UART, and SPI interfaces for communication with hardware components
  • Collaboration: Strong team player with excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset
  • Analytic Thinking and Communication: Strong Mathematical, troubleshooting, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to obtain a Top Secret (TS) Security Clearance , and eligible to support special access programs, for which U.S citizenship is needed by the U.S government
  • BS + 5 years' relevant experience, MS + 3 years, or PhD in a related field

Nice To Haves

  • Autonomy software experience: Proficiency in Mission Oriented Operating Suite Interval Programming (MOOS-IvP) and Laboratory for Autonomous Marine Sensing Systems (LAMSS) use with embedded systems
  • Robotic system experience: Prior experience developing software for robotic systems, especially undersea robots
  • Undersea Acoustic Experience: Demonstrated experience implementing embedded real-time signal processing software for undersea acoustic systems
  • Experience with Active Noise control
  • Active Top Secret (TS) security clearance
  • Experience interacting with U.S. Navy and other U.S. Government organizations and processes
  • Experience with field testing the developed systems, especially at-sea testing including acoustic communications, data analysis to demonstrate at-sea performance, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimize real-time acoustic signal processing algorithms
  • Implement software on various hardware platforms, including low-SWAP processors, ARM processors, and server-class processors
  • Utilize development containers, git repositories, and Jira for efficient task management and collaboration
  • Ensure software meets stringent real-time and high-fidelity requirements
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, integrate, and validate software on target hardware for distributed undersea systems
