Cable One is seeking a Senior Director, Software Engineering, Automation & Shared Services to set the technical vision, guide multiple software engineering teams, and drive the delivery of scalable, reliable, and high-impact software solutions. This role partners closely with Product, Business, and Executive Leadership to shape long-range technology strategy, optimize systems and processes, and ensure our platforms support both current operations and future growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Applied Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent experience.
  • 12–15+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • 10+ years in technical leadership or management roles.
  • At least 5 years leading multiple engineering teams, including 3+ years as a manager of managers.
  • Proven experience mentoring, developing, and scaling high-performing engineering organizations.
  • Experience working in large-scale technology organizations.
  • Deep experience with distributed systems, cloud services, and modern software architectures.
  • Strong background in telecommunications billing platforms, infrastructure, and protocols.
  • Hands-on experience with Java, C#, and Python.
  • Expertise in microservices, SOA, and modern web frameworks.
  • Strong foundations in software architecture, testing patterns, and system design.
  • Proven experience implementing DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and release management.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract, hire, retain, and grow top engineering talent.
  • Strong judgment and initiative when resolving complex technical and organizational challenges.
  • Lead with empathy while maintaining high standards and accountability.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and executive-level communication skills.
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear business impact.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in a Computer Science or Engineering-related field (preferred).
  • Developer nanodegree or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Proficiency with Spring Boot and Spring Cloud for microservices (preferred).
  • Experience implementing LLMs into product workflows (bonus).

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership & Vision Set the vision and foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and technical excellence across software engineering teams.
  • Drive strategic initiatives and deliver impactful software solutions aligned with business and operational goals.
  • Establish technology and architecture standards and define roadmaps grounded in enterprise strategy.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and influence emerging industry technologies, frameworks, and standards.
  • Partner with senior leadership to build business cases for new technology adoption.
  • Navigate organizational complexity and drive alignment across teams and stakeholders.
  • Influence technology and policy decisions across the broader VP organization.
  • Technology, Architecture & Operational Excellence Develop long-range technical requirements and operational guidelines to improve system, tool, and network performance and reliability.
  • Lead Continuous Process Improvement actions to optimize workflows and drive efficiencies.
  • Create project forecasts, ensure appropriate implementation, and identify resource requirements for complex software and network systems.
  • Craft and implement policies and procedures related to software tools, processes, technologies, maintenance, and monitoring.
  • Champion DevOps best practices, CI/CD pipelines, release management, and operational resilience.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration Work closely with Product Owners to plan and execute both tactical and strategic initiatives.
  • Partner with business leaders to identify opportunities for innovation and efficiency.
  • Collaborate on evaluating, developing, and launching new products and product offerings.
  • Clearly communicate highly technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Vendor & External Management Build and maintain strong partnerships with vendors and service providers to select solutions aligned with company goals.
  • Analyze vendor roadmaps to anticipate and plan for upcoming technology changes.
  • Business & Financial Acumen Manage departmental operating and capital expense budgets, including periodic reforecasting.
  • Make data-driven decisions balancing customer experience, technical excellence, and business outcomes.
  • Evaluate financial decisions using NPV, ROI, and other relevant metrics.
  • Set goals aligned with business needs and lead teams to deliver measurable results.
