Position Summary: The Senior Director of Multi-Tiered Support Systems (MTSS) is a senior leader on the Academic Team responsible for designing, implementing, and continuously improving a coherent, network-wide MTSS framework that ensures every student receives timely, data-driven academic, social emotional, and behavioral support. Reporting to the Deputy Chief Academic Officer and working closely with the Chief Academic Officer, this leader drives alignment across curriculum, instruction, intervention, assessment, and special education systems to strengthen Tier 1 instruction, accelerate intervention effectiveness, and improve equitable student outcomes. This role combines strategic vision with hands-on coaching, professional development, team management, and data-informed decision-making to build leadership capacity and drive equitable student outcomes. The Senior Director partners closely with school leaders, Regional Schools Officers (RSOs), and cross-functional departments to ensure consistent, high-quality implementation of MTSS across all campuses

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum 10+ years of relevant professional education and experience in curricula and assessment, instruction, school programming, adult learning and development and school leadership
  • Familiarity with approaches for adult learning, coaching, and professional development
  • Demonstrated success supporting student achievement in historically under-resourced or equity-focused school communities
  • Familiarity with Common Core Standards, New Jersey Student Learning Standards, ISTE standards.
  • Familiarity with common national education programs and products
  • A proven track record of achieving measurable results
  • Experience leading high-performing teams to achieve organizational goals
  • Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the role as outlined above, and to work in the environmental conditions required, such as traveling to network campuses, monitoring and interacting with students, in-person facilitation of trainings, etc.
  • This role may require frequent travel between multiple locations.
  • Reliable transportation is essential to fulfill job responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Vision, Strategy & System Design In collaboration with the Deputy Chief Academic Officer and Chief Academic Officer, set the organizational vision, strategy, and implementation plan for MTSS aligned to organizational goals and student achievement priorities.
  • Draws on experts in the field, peer networks, and internal pilots, to establish a compelling theory of action for growth and achievement that drives a network strategy to achieve Mastery’s ambitious goals.
  • Build a scalable MTSS model, grounded in national research and best practices, that can be consistently replicated and grown across grades K–12, that includes codified Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 systems for screening, progress monitoring, intervention protocols, and referral processes.
  • Establish the vision, systems, and quality standards for alignment between MTSS, curriculum strategy, assessment systems, special education identification practices, summer learning, tutoring, and promotion criteria.
  • Establish measurable goals and benchmarks to evaluate MTSS effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.
  • Refine network strategy for driving improvements in Mastery’s approach to summer learning and tutoring aligned to student support needs illuminated through MTSS initiatives Data & Intervention Effectiveness
  • Lead network-wide systems and processes for universal screening, early identification of student needs, ongoing progress monitoring, intervention program selection, implementation fidelity, and impact evaluation.
  • Solidify clear measures of intervention effectiveness, including defined entry and exit criteria across tiers, and aligned network, school, and student-level goals to measure MTSS program effectiveness.
  • Analyze academic and behavioral data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities, and adjust strategy to improve student outcomes.
  • Reduce disproportionate special education identification through strengthened Tier 1 instruction and effective early intervention systems. Leader Coaching, Professional Development & Management
  • Manage, develop, and retain Directors and Assistant Directors to ensure a highly engaged and high-functioning team poised to meet goals, embody NST standard operating procedures, deliver high quality support to schools, and support schools execution of the Mastery’s program model
  • Provide direct, high-impact coaching to school leaders on implementing effective MTSS structures, data cycles, and intervention systems.
  • Design and deliver professional development for principals, assistant principals, and instructional leaders on MTSS best practices and data-driven decision making.
  • Build a comprehensive training plan to strengthen MTSS capacity among school-based leaders and central network leaders.
  • Develop tools, playbooks, and resources that build leader capacity to sustain strong MTSS implementation. Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Partner with RSOs, Special Education, Academics, School Culture, Assessment, and Talent Teams to ensure coherence across academic and student support systems.
  • In collaboration with cross-functional content directors in Academics and Equity, build a cross-curricular manual of guidance outlining appropriate instructional and curricular responses (and supporting resources) across Tiers.
  • Collaborate with Chiefs, Deputy Chiefs, and Regional Schools Officers to align MTSS implementation to broader network strategic priorities and improve Mastery’s systems and model.
  • Manage and develop a team aligned to a shared vision for equitable student access and achievement through formal and dotted-line management.
  • Serve on the Academic Team’s Leadership Team, which steers the organization’s academic strategy and execution. Continuous Improvement & Innovation
  • Stay current on national best practices in MTSS, intervention science, and equitable support models.
  • Pilot innovative intervention strategies and scale effective practices across the network.
  • Establish feedback loops with schools to refine systems and ensure implementation quality.

  • The Senior Director of Multi-Tiered Support Systems at Mastery can expect a starting salary between $125,000 - $152,000, based on education and experience, with opportunities for growth as your career progresses.
