Senior Director of Business Intelligence

Vertex EducationChandler, AZ

About The Position

Be the one who makes a difference! At Vertex Education we are a team of high achievers, courageous leaders, and passionate believers in changing lives through education. As a purpose-led education services provider, our mission is destined to benefit many and yet it starts with just one person inspired to work together with us to make a memorable and meaningful difference for our clients, schools, students, and communities. Be the one who makes a difference—with us. The Senior Director of Business Intelligence will lead the analytics function at Vertex Education, driving strategic business decisions through high-impact analysis, building a Center of Excellence that serves the entire organization, and establishing the trusted data products and governance that empower leaders at every level. This role works in close partnership with a peer Director of Data Engineering. This leader will operate as a hands-on player-coach, mentoring a team of analysts while building a disciplined hybrid CoE with both central and business-embedded resources. The core mission is to evolve the BI function into a proactive, strategic engine, one that leaders across Vertex rely on to make their most important decisions. This role can be Director, Sr Director, or VP level depending on experience

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in business intelligence or data analytics, with at least 3 years in a people management role leading an analytics team.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a quantitative field such as Business Analytics, Computer Science, Statistics, or Economics.
  • Proven experience designing, implementing, and leading a Business Intelligence Center of Excellence (CoE) or a similar hybrid, matrixed analytics function.
  • Hands-on proficiency in a modern data stack, including data visualization (Tableau), analytics engineering (dbt), and cloud data warehousing (Snowflake).
  • A track record of translating complex, ambiguous business problems into concrete analytical projects that deliver strategic insights and influence executive-level decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a player-coach, providing direct mentorship, reviewing technical work (e.g., SQL, dbt models), and elevating the skills of a growing analyst team.
  • Experience establishing and enforcing data governance and quality assurance (QA) frameworks to ensure the reliability of all published data products.
  • Proven ability to manage and prioritize a portfolio of analytics projects for multiple senior stakeholders in a fast-paced, multi-entity environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a multi-entity or multi-site operational environment (e.g., education, franchise models, healthcare, multi-location retail).
  • Experience managing an operational budget for an analytics function, including software licensing (e.g., Tableau, Fivetran), contractor spend, and training.
  • Familiarity with leveraging AI tools and techniques to augment analytical workflows and accelerate the delivery of insights.
  • Experience using project management tools like Asana to manage sprints and team workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Insight & Analysis: Translate complex, ambiguous business problems into specific, actionable analytical questions and workstreams to guide decision-making across enrollment, operations, academics, marketing, finance, and HR. Deliver rapid-response analysis for executive leadership and division heads, prioritizing speed and pragmatism to provide timely, directional answers for critical decisions. Conduct proactive data exploration to uncover insights and opportunities that drive significant business impact—moving beyond fulfilling requests to originating strategic recommendations. Present findings and strategic recommendations to the CEO and senior leaders, communicating complex data stories in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Player-Coach Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a team of BI analysts through direct, hands-on coaching on technical skills (SQL, dbt, Tableau) and business acumen. Actively review analyst work, pairing on complex problems to improve code quality, modeling techniques, and the overall reliability of outputs. Recruit, hire, and onboard new central and business-embedded analysts to build out the hybrid Center of Excellence model across key business functions. Define clear career paths and performance expectations, fostering a team culture of accountability, proactive communication, and pride in quality work.
  • Analytics Governance & Quality Assurance: Design and enforce a rigorous, non-negotiable pre-publication quality assurance (QA) process for all BI-produced data products to guarantee reliability. Own and advance the analytics engineering function, establishing standards within the dbt semantic layer to create certified business metrics. The Sr BI director owns business metric definitions (what ‘enrolled’ or ‘retained’ means in context); data engineering leads the governance forum and co-signs on the unified metric glossary. Own Tableau platform administration: content governance, folder structure, certified data sources, user permissions, and licensing management. Manage the BI team’s operational cadence using tools like Asana, including sprint planning, retrospectives, and status reporting to ensure disciplined execution. Act as the primary point of accountability for data quality incidents in published dashboards and analytics products. Diagnose whether issues originate in the analytics layer (fix directly) or the data layer (escalate to data engineering), and lead post-mortems.
  • Strategic Prioritization & Cross-Functional Partnership: Partner with the CEO and executive leaders to define and manage the strategic BI roadmap, aligning priorities with the most critical business objectives across all divisions. Manage the intake of competing analytics requests from across the enterprise, protecting team capacity for the highest-impact work while communicating tradeoffs transparently. Collaborate closely with the peer Director of Data Engineering to align on dependencies, handoffs, shared metric definitions, and the data trust model (BI owns analytics layer accuracy; data engineering owns pipeline reliability). Drive self-service analytics adoption across the organization: training programs, documentation, office hours, change management, and usage measurement—partnering with data engineering on the underlying platform.
