About The Position

Provides strategic and hands on leadership for API’s Meetings & Events department. Develops and implements a business strategy across the organization that incorporates API’s advocacy, standard setting, and revenue goals. Provides leadership and mentoring to the Events team to ensure staff development and resource allocation in keeping with API principles and goals. Partners with the Facilities Department for successful execution of internal events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant area or other related field, or equivalent work experience
  • 12+ years significant experience in the meetings industry including a variety in-person, virtual and hybrid meeting platforms both
  • At least 4 years leadership and management experience.
  • Strong organizational abilities with both people and resources.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Exceptional executive presence including written and verbal communication skills with individuals and groups at all levels, informally and in formal presentations.
  • Enjoys a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to effectively and successfully manage simultaneous projects.
  • Strong team building skills and ability to motivate others.
  • Team-player mindset and willingness to collaborate.
  • Experience with senior level corporate executives
  • Strong knowledge of budgeting and finance processes.
  • Experience with contract negotiations, including related legal issues.
  • Proficient with Microsoft applications especially Word, Excel, Access, and SharePoint with an aptitude to learn other computer programs quickly.
  • Experience with registration management software and processes.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of standing.
  • Capable of lifting up to 20lbs on occasion.
  • 25% to 50% Percentage of travel time expected for the position, where the travel occurs, such as locally or in specific countries or states, and whether the travel is overnight.

Responsibilities

  • Working with API leaders and internal/external clients develop and implement an enterprise-wide events strategy that incorporates a best-in-class creative, consistent approach to API’s wide range of programs and events - virtual, hybrid and physical. This includes establishing clear accountabilities and responsibilities for client and events.
  • Lead and manage the Meetings & Events team to ensure the professional implementation of API events, including client engagement, event content, and financial management.
  • Provide growth opportunities and mentoring to events team to support their and the team’s development: Budget Development Budget Oversight Contract Oversight and Management
  • Plan and execute high-visibility meetings, including Annual Meeting, Board of Directors and Executive Committee meetings.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and best practices and the ability to implement practical changes to ensure API’s events are current and relevant.
  • Accountable for all aspects of the Events department budget to ensure highest level of fiscal responsibility. This includes driving economies of scale across our events and resources.
  • Establish and cultivate collaborative relationships across API to facilitate success and change management.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with event vendors including hotels, event venues, speakers’ bureaus, caterers, etc. to ensure API event standards are achieved in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Actively support and model API’s principles.
