About The Position

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity. The Senior Development Operations Process Engineer will drive process development, workflow optimization, and prototype/NPI support across multiple hardware development labs within Amazon Leo’s Development Operations (DevOps) organization. This role supports a wide variety of mechanical and electromechanical development activities, including prototype builds, test article assembly, low-volume process design, tooling development, and cross-functional coordination with design, test, and production teams. You will develop scalable processes for early-stage hardware, eliminate bottlenecks, create knowledge-centered documentation, improve first-pass yield, and partner closely with lab engineers, technicians, and design teams. This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy hands-on development work, ambiguous problem spaces, and building highly efficient workflows in a fast-paced environment. Experience with harnessing is welcome but not required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • 3+ years of experience in process development, NPI, prototype manufacturing, or development-lab operations.
  • Experience conducting process capability studies, MSAs, and defect/throughput analysis.
  • Experience generating work instructions, process flows, or assembly documentation.
  • Hands-on experience in mechanical or electromechanical assembly environments.
  • Experience with ERP or MES systems (SAP, Oracle, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years supporting prototype hardware, development labs, or NPI environments.
  • Experience designing or improving low-volume or one-off build processes.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T, mechanical drawings, BOM structures, and assembly sequences.
  • Experience optimizing lab layouts, workstation design, or tooling/jig concepts.
  • Experience with root cause methodologies (5-Whys, Ishikawa, DMAIC).
  • Ability to work independently in ambiguous development environments.
  • (Optional) Aerospace harnessing or electromechanical wiring experience.
  • (Optional) Experience with failure analysis labs, test operations, or materials labs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and improve mechanical, electromechanical, and development-lab processes for prototype and NPI builds.
  • Conduct process studies (MSA/Gage R&R, Cpks, time studies, defect analysis) to drive quality and throughput improvements.
  • Create work instructions, build plans, process flows, and tooling concepts for low-volume builds.
  • Partner with design teams to ensure design-for-assembly and development requirements are captured early.
  • Drive root-cause investigations and implement corrective actions for build and test issues.
  • Improve traceability and workflow through ERP, PLM, and other internal systems.
  • Mentor technicians and lab engineers on process discipline, documentation, and quality execution.
  • Support continuous improvement of DevOps lab operations including layout optimization and workflow standardization.
  • (Optional) Support process development for electrical harnessing.
