About The Position

The Senior Counsel, Generation Development will provide legal support to LS Power’s generation development group, with a specific focus on natural gas-fired development projects. This role combines deep transactional expertise with hands-on project development support across the full lifecycle of large-scale generation assets. The Senior Counsel will act as a trusted legal advisor to development and investment teams from early-stage project conception through commercialization, permitting, financing, construction, and operation. This position requires close collaboration with cross-functional internal teams and external counterparties to enable efficient execution of complex development and investment activities

Requirements

  • Hold a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and are licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Bring 10+ years of experience handling complex transactional matters, either in-house or at a law firm.
  • Are capable of acting as the primary in-house attorney on multiple concurrent development and transactional matters.
  • Exercise strong judgment and can balance legal risk with commercial objectives in fast-paced environments.
  • Communicate clearly and persuasively with internal teams and external counterparties.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and a collaborative mindset to support broader legal team priorities as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting power generation or energy infrastructure development projects, particularly natural gas-fired assets.
  • Familiarity with project development, project finance, construction, real estate, and environmental permitting.
  • Experience with commercial contracts such as power or fuel supply agreements, EPC contracts, equipment procurement, and interconnection agreements.
  • Prior in-house experience within the energy, infrastructure, or private equity sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary in-house counsel supporting gas-fired power generation development projects.
  • Lead and advise on complex transactions at all stages of the project lifecycle, including structuring, drafting, and negotiating term sheets and definitive agreements.
  • Provide legal support across commercial, real estate, permitting and entitlement, EPC, equipment procurement, interconnection, and financing activities.
  • Support M&A, joint venture, and strategic transactions related to generation development assets.
  • Assist with preparation of investment committee and internal approval materials.
  • Identify, assess, and manage legal risks, providing clear, pragmatic recommendations aligned with business objectives.
  • Collaborate closely with development, finance, tax, regulatory, environmental, construction, asset management, and energy management teams.
  • Manage and coordinate outside counsel efficiently to support project objectives.
  • Support resolution of disputes or claims as needed in coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
