About The Position

This is an Open Competitive Senior Community Health Nurse position working in the Lee County Department of Health. This Senior Community Health Nurse position is under the supervision of the Nursing Program Specialist with the Florida Department of Health in Lee County. The incumbent provides public health nursing services for clients in FDOH -Lee clinics. The incumbent must maintain a current working knowledge of the Department of Health’s immunization program and policies. Incumbent handles protected health information on a need-to-know basis following Department of Health, HIPAA and Information Security and privacy policy. Employee abides by State/Federal laws governing health information. Responsible to maintain confidentiality, security, privacy and integrity of protected health information. Refers and utilizes DOH 50-10. Incumbent will have access to records containing social security numbers in the performance of job duties. This position has access to the following information sets: Medical Records, Laboratory Reports, Immunizations, FLSHOTS, and the electronic health records system. Incumbent may be required to work during or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.

  • Bachelor of Science degree from a U.S. accredited college or university in Nursing is required.
  • Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.27.
  • Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.  Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
  • Incumbent must possess a valid Florida Driver License and have a motor vehicle to carry out these duties.
  • Selected immunizations or titers and/or periodic screening for tuberculosis may be recommended for this position.
  • This position will abide by all state and federal laws, rules, and DOH policies and procedures.
  • Must be willing to undergo FIT Testing.
  • Required to maintain a current Basic Life Support CPR with AED (BLS) certification.
  • This position is authorized to transport confidential information outside of established DOH-Lee facilities and must comply with parameters defined in DOHP 50-10
  • Successful completion of a drug test is a condition of employment.
  • This position is classified as sensitive. This individual will perform tasks defined as sensitive and handles confidential information. Background screening is a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes and maintains health of individuals, families, and the community through appropriate preventative and rehabilitative measures.
  • Provides comprehensive nursing in all FDOH Lee clinics and community settings as warranted. These services include administration of immunizations based on patient’s immunization status, current immunization guidelines, vaccination schedules, and statutory requirements, reproductive health services, counseling/testing, health screening, health education, referrals and follow-up of the referrals, timely and thorough documentation, and collection of laboratory specimens.
  • Maintains comprehensive quality records in FLSHOTS and the electronic health records system, collects and reports pertinent data to advanced practice registered nurses and physicians; provides appropriate case follow-up; participates in case conferences; confers with other professionals; formulates and evaluates care plans, assists in record reviews; recognizes and understands the changes in the community and nursing practice which affects community health unit programs/plans; serves as staff advisor to student affiliates and new staff nurses.
  • Verifies and certifies immunization clinical records, including but not limited to the 680 form, as appropriate.
  • Monitors climate-controlled vaccine storage units daily, Monitors vaccine physical inventory and supply inventories, assists in managing vaccine and supply inventories by accepting, recording and stocking supply inventory and vaccine inventory in climate-controlled vaccine storage units upon receipt. Provides a daily log to the program manager of vaccines administered.
  • Assists with health fairs, community organizations, and specific public health events as requested. Prepares reports or other required data within specified time frames. Attends pertinent conferences as requested or permitted.
  • Prepares biweekly leave/attendance records and daily employee activity records (EARs).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
