About The Position

As Senior Communications Specialist, you’ll join an award-winning team that tells the stories of public education—and the leaders who serve Texas students every day, including more than 7,000 elected school board members across the state. In this role, you’ll bring strategy and creativity to member-facing communications and help shape our flagship magazine, Texas Lone Star. You’ll develop, implement, and evaluate communications plans that advance TASB’s strategic objectives and strengthen our reputation with members and the public. You’ll also serve as a trusted advisor and steady project lead for strategic campaigns—guiding work from concept to completion so it lands with clarity, purpose, and the highest standards of accuracy and quality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in a communications role, with at lease two years in a senior specialist capacity or as a team lead.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong project leadership abilities.
  • Ability to write long-form magazine features.
  • Advanced knowledge of social media management and digital communication tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Understanding of the K-12 public education landscape and legislative processes.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Outstanding organizational and planning skills, including an understanding of project management.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and experience working in a content management system.
  • Knowledge of AP Style.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and lead communication campaigns and creative projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy and organization.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across the Association.

  • Prior experience as a communications specialist in a K-12 public education or nonprofit setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end creation of high-impact content across print, digital, and social—keeping every channel cohesive, on brand, and consistently excellent.
  • Write and edit sharp, engaging copy for newsletters, social media, web, video, and Texas Lone Star—distilling complex ideas into clear, reader-friendly messages that inform and inspire.
  • Partner across the Association as a go-to communications liaison—supporting teams with events, campaigns, and outreach that connect with members and move work forward.
  • Join a high-performing Communications team that pairs creative collaboration with a deep commitment to accuracy, clarity, and deadlines.
  • Deliver standout, member-first content that informs, equips, and celebrates school leaders across print, digital, and social platforms.
  • Lead projects from kickoff to final proof—keeping teams aligned, processes on track, and deliverables polished and on time.
  • Translate complex K-12 policy and education trends into clear, compelling stories that help school leaders act with confidence.
  • Build trusted relationships with internal partners and subject-matter experts to elevate ideas into campaigns that move from concept to measurable results.
  • Shape the voice and direction of Texas Lone Star—delivering thoughtful features that celebrate districts, spotlight innovation, and strengthen member pride.
  • Raise the bar for editorial excellence by refining processes and ensuring every deliverable is professional, accurate, and on-brand.
  • Help advance TASB’s mission at scale—so the communications you lead today support stronger governance, better decision-making, and brighter outcomes for Texas students.
