About The Position

mpathic is keeping humans safe in the AI era with experts and software that are rooted in psychology and powered by clinicians. We work with leading AI model builders, application layers and clinical researchers to understand and protect people, reducing the world’s biggest human risks. We’re looking for a Senior Clinical Research Scientist who thrives in fast-moving, ambiguous environments and wants to have a meaningful impact on building safe, trustworthy AI grounded in clinical science. As part of our clinical research team, your mission is to provide scientific context, judgment, and support that enables high-quality clinical and research work to move forward independently and with rigor. You’ll partner closely with the Chief Scientific Officer, Clinical Scientists, Data Scientists, TPMs, and ML engineers to translate high-level scientific priorities into clear guidance. You will also support junior researchers, and take ownership of complex workstreams. This is a full-time role, with a preference for candidates based in San Francisco or Seattle, offering substantial ownership and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development of rigorous, clinically grounded AI safety practices.

Requirements

  • Have 5+ years of experience working in applied clinical research, behavioral science, or human-centered AI contexts, and are comfortable operating in environments where problems are not fully specified
  • Are experienced translating clinical theory and judgment into practical research, evaluation, or data workflows
  • Are comfortable collaborating with cross-functional partners (e.g., data science, engineering, product, or program management) and navigating differing priorities with clarity and respect
  • Have strong independent judgment and can move work forward without detailed instructions, while knowing when to seek input to ensure alignment
  • Enjoy supporting and mentoring junior researchers, helping them think through complex questions and tradeoffs together rather than prescribing step-by-step solutions
  • Communicate clearly and thoughtfully through written feedback, discussions, and examples, especially when navigating ambiguity or tradeoffs
  • Are energized by iteration and refinement, and see feedback as a tool for improving both your work and shared systems
  • Take ownership of your work, care deeply about quality and impact, and bring a collaborative, grounded approach to problem-solving

Responsibilities

  • Build a strong working understanding of mpathic’s clinical, research, and data workflows, and where additional clarity or context can improve execution
  • Provide review, feedback, and scientific support to Clinical Scientists and Research Scientists to help them navigate complex or ambiguous work
  • Help junior researchers think through tradeoffs, edge cases, and next steps—supporting their growth and independence as individual contributors
  • Contribute to a team culture that values thoughtful execution, early communication, and shared standards
  • Identify areas where clearer guidance, examples, or lightweight process could reduce friction or rework
  • Serve as a consistent source of scientific context and continuity across multiple projects
  • Enable Clinical Scientists and Research Scientists to work more independently by offering timely input, review, and perspective
  • Support the evolution of clinical and research workflows as projects scale in complexity
  • Help maintain a high bar for scientific rigor, ethics, and real-world applicability across mpathic’s work
  • Be a trusted collaborator who helps others succeed while taking responsibility for your own workstreams
