About The Position

The Senior Career Services Advisor plays a pivotal role within Buckeye Commons by connecting students at The Ohio State University to comprehensive career development resources and support. Buckeye Commons is a new center within Student Life that serves as an open, welcoming, and multi-purpose environment where students can build community, connect with resources, and engage in programming that supports their ability to engage, learn, and thrive. This position provides career advising and coaching to students at all stages of their academic and professional journeys, including undergraduate, graduate, professional, PhD, and postdocs. The Senior Career Services Specialist supports students in areas such as career exploration and planning; job and internship search strategies; résumé and cover letter development; interviewing skills; salary negotiation; and effective use of career-related resources and technology. The role delivers both individual and group career coaching and is responsible for developing, facilitating, and assessing career-related workshops, presentations, programs, and events. Additionally, the position contributes to the creation, maintenance, and updating of career education materials and digital content to ensure alignment with evolving industry trends and best practices in the field of career development. The Senior Career Services Advisor provides leadership and operational support for Student Life’s Career Studios, a university-wide peer career coaching program. This includes overseeing onboarding and training, providing on-site support at multiple Career Studio locations across campus, and supervising five or more student Peer Career Coaches. In this role, the Senior Career Services Advisor manages and responds to incoming student inquiries; completes required documentation and transactions within the university-wide career management system; and builds and sustains collaborative relationships across the Ohio State community, including regional campuses, academic colleges, university departments, and career services partners. This position also provides holistic support for student initiatives and events coordinated through Buckeye Commons and the Office of Student Life, contributing to a comprehensive, student-centered approach to career development and engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience in student development and career services
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience working with and supporting students with a wide range of needs
  • Experience in supervising, training, and coaching student staff
  • Comfortable using technology to support student and employee learning and development
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including facilitation
  • Ability to develop strong, collaborative relationships across a large organization
  • Self-directed, adaptable, and able to make decisions in ambiguous situations
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, including offering recommendations and responding proactively to opportunities
  • Strong organizational, planning, and attention-to-detail skills
  • Effective time and energy management, with the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives independently
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft products (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as required
  • Successful completion of a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior work experience in higher education or career services
  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Education, Nonprofit Administration, Student Affairs, Business, or related field
  • Demonstrated understanding of experiential learning, including internships and on-campus employment
  • Experience using a career management system (e.g., Handshake)
  • 5-8 years of professional experience working with and supporting students with a wide range of needs
